Winchester model 100 - opinions?

I owned a .243 model 100. The first problem was that it wouldn't eject. Solved with 80.00 visit to gunsmith. Second problem broken action bar. Solved with 140.00 visit to gunsmith. Third problem magazine would drop out after firing a two round string. Solved by trading it for a model 88 in .308. The trouble is that it was a sweet handling rifle and I wished I could have made it work right.

cheers Darryl

I briefly owned a Model 100 in 284 Win a few years back. I had 12 factory rounds at home so I cleaned it up and took it to the range.....it jammed three or four times in 12 rounds...not a good percentage.....down the road it went...

The only thing to check, is that Winchester did a recall of them some years back, it was to fix the firing pin. Apparently they could peen, and go full auto.

"How does peening of the firing pin cause a semi-auto rifle go full auto?"
I'm not very familliar with the action/trigger mech or "Theory of operation" so to speak,is there something this model has thats different to other semi-auto hunting rifles??

OK,now I get it. The firing pin is peened to such that it now acts like a fixed firing pin as found in SMG's like the Sten & Sterling.
When the bolt/breech block move forward into battery it initiates the round upon chambering.:) :) :) :) :) :)

On the original firing pin there is/was a shoulder that would peen with use and prevent the firing pin from retracting under it's spring pressure. I had one so bad that I had to use jeweller's files to trim the shoulder down to get it out of the bolt.

Oh..Oh.. you may have traded away a perfectly fine M-100!
My experience with them is they won't cycle properly off a set of bags  No idea why but of the ones I have had, only one would cycle reliably from bags although all worked fine off hand :)
