winchester model 12 problem

I just picked up a model 12win. in 12 gauge.It has a problem in that I can not cycle the action unless I push the slide lock button .It dosen't matter that the gun is not cocked the action will not open unless I push the slide lock button.
any ideas?

Just a thought. Dry fire the shotgun. Pull back on the pump handle. If it doesn't move that is what is was designed to do. The pump handle has to be pushed forward slightly to unlock the action. This was designed in the 12 to prevent hangfires from going off with the action partially open. With modern ammo this is no longer a hazard and not designed into more modern shotguns. You will hear a distinct click when you push the pump handle forward.

I have seen others like this as well. The Savage/Stevens 820B pump action has to detect recoil in order to be opened without actuating the bolt release too.....

Yes, on a model 12, the recoil resets the slide lock. Take it out and shoot, it'll be OK.
