Good Morning All,

So I've recently come into possession of an OLD Model 12 takedown in 12ga and I've run into what I think is an issue with it. This could be finger trouble because I'm in no way familiar with the Model 12 in any respect.

When I attempt to load the magazine, the shells are not stopped by a shell stop like they are in say, an 870 or 500. If I'm somewhat cautious loading it, the lifter will catch the shells, retaining them in the magazine.

During the operation cycle, the shell stop will only allow one round onto the lifter, and thus, allow what I can tell to be normal operation. It just strikes me as odd that the shell stop will not prevent rounds from coming out of the magazine. The lifter seems to do that though. If I'm careful loading it, as mentioned above, I can fill the magazine and it seems to cycle shells normally.

As I said, I am not familiar with the operation of the Model 12, so my question is: "Is this sequence of events normal?"

Thanks to all for your time.

I experienced the same uncomfortable feeling when I first loaded my model 12. The lifter is the round stop. It looks weird, but works slick as anything. There is a device that engages at full pump that blocks the next shell from coming out of the mag. Weird to load too until you get used to it.

This is just one of the reasons the Model 12 is so special. . It looks just fine when you roll the gun over a bit and see the brass rim of a shell in the magazine. . When you feed a shell into the magazine don't push the first shell all the way in but leave the brass rim sticking out a bit. . The second shell will go in so much easier. . When you unload there's no need to work the two shells in the magazine through the gun, just press the carrier up with your middle finger and the two shells will eject out into your hand.

If you pull out the trigger assy. for lubrication, make certain the shell cutoff has a very small amount of gun oil in the pivot and most important make certain the front of the shell cutoff is fitting correctly into the groove of the receiver.

All Model 12's are takedowns. . Model 25's are solid frames.
