Ok I'll try to get an answer here. I tried another site and got a long winded answer that really answered nothing. I'm looking at a Model 12 Trap gun. I don't know much about them and want to know what issues I should be looking for? Things like the bolt lockup and the like. The gun looks in really great shape.

you'll have to try to get a fix on it's usage, if that's not bad, and it has no special features, and you've determined that it is an orig. Trap gun, go for it, I believe it to be worth $500+ without seeing it or it's condition. Don't let some on here like Struff55 try to lowball you, they are nice guns and a part of trap shooting history

The only issue you need to look for on Model 12 is in the recess in the receiver where the bolt locks up run your finger on the top of the cutaway if you feel ridge then the gun has fired a lot of rounds other than that any problems can be fixed. A bit of model 12 trivia when Lyman put out there first reloading manual they didn't use a pressure gun they used three model 12.s they fired over a Million rounds through them sent them back to Winchester for servicing and were sent back to Lyman. Lets see your Noricajunk do that .Ben my offer still stands $400.00

By the way my model 12 trap has about 90,000 rounds threw it by me since when I bought it in 1970 and it was made in 1948 I can't even guess how many were shot threw it before I got it.

Concur ... but if an "original" in really great shape, I'd be looking at something
more like $ 750 - $ 1000. See if the Winchester proof mark is visible slightly offset from center on the left side of both the receiver & barrel ... if it is with the original "duck bill" rib- extension, chances are it's the real McCoy.

Struffy likely paid $ 300 for his much-used Mod. 12 Trap nearly 40 years ago ... probably still thinks that's all they're worth ! ;)

See if he'll sell you his for $ 425 ???

What Struff55 states is mostly all there is to be aware of. If your a fan of collectability then make sure your gun has not been "monkyed" with. Lots of wierd customized M12 trap guns out there. As for action wear also close the action and try to move the bolt back and forth with your thumb. If there is lots of visible movement there will be bolt/reciever wear. Most trap guns have plenty of blueing as they have not been carried much but many have had thousands of rounds through them. Also break the gun down and check the positioning of the adjustment ring for the barrel/magazine recievier connection even if no play exists between them.

The last M12 trap gun I purchased was from the original owner with box and bill of sale. It was manufactred in 1963 and is in original condition and near mint. I payed 1000 bucks for it which I thought was a bit high. It's manufacture date was at the very end of the Model 12 production legacy. Workmanship was somewhat inferrior IMO to guns I own and have seen that were made earlyer in the production period.

Struff55 won't be happy to hear that someone paid 1000$ for one, cuz it puts him in a tough spot, bidding way low on a historically significant M-12.

Thanks guys. I'm going to try to get up to see this gun again this week. It's been on the rack for awhile, now that could be because it's not any good, but I tend to think it's because most guys around here seem to shoot BT-99s or Citoris for trap. Collectability doesn't really concern me, I just want a good solid Trap gun for not a whole lot of money, this one is priced at $699 and I have a trade-in and can probably get $100-$150 chopped off the price. I also want it because I like classic guns.

Some folks may find that they are at a disadvantage when shooting doubles with a pumpgun in Trap, don't forget that a normal trap shoot is 300 birds and 100 of them are doubles.

I shoot a round or two weekly with my M12trap gun. Pull one of those babys out and an eyebrow or two will raise...but only with the oldtimers.

Shot plenty of ducks with my traps as well. Bored very tight and were best used for field or pass shooting. Non toic requirements ended all this a decade ago.

i love the old model 12s and grew up shooting them .as far as model 12 trtap guns and model 12s in general the prices have come down a long way in ont .20 years ago thy sold trap guns with very nice wood for a grand now you have a hard time getting 500$.the only ones i see holding there value is the 20 and 16 g soild rib guns but thy got to be mint .as far a shooter go thewre prices have droped right off with the steel shot laws .thy do make a great gun .buy her up and enjoy .do not worry about what others think she is worth .

Does it say Trap on the receiver underneath the SN. Number is it a Monte Carlo Or Standard Stock. Here we go with the pricing thing again there was one on EE a while back for $ 675. Elwood Epps Just sold a couple in the $55o. range I was a a Gun show last fall and saw a beautiful one for $500. Sorry guys they don't bring the kind of dollars your talking about .Even when you go on gun Broker or guns America and go to the completed listings not the ridiculous Buy it now or starting bids the actual price that they are sold for is no where near the price that they list at .

The "trap" designation below the S# was dropped in the early 1960's though...for what reason I don't know. Maybe a cost saving thing.

There's enough dedicated Trapshooters in these parts to still get a good buck for an original Mod. 12 Trap ... and 12 & 20 Skeet guns still bring good dollars. A 28 Skeet is, and has been, out to lunch price-wise for along time ... and the 42's .... just try and get an original ribbed gun for under a grand ! You can still get $ 700 - 750 for the Browning clones in 20, 28 & 410.

A new 870 Trap retails for over $ 1000 .... a "like-new" original and unaltered Model 12 or Remington 31 Trap gun is worth at least as much or more to many.

28's do bring the highest dollars IMO. Also today for someone to come by and give you a grand or more for a 12-12ga. trap or skeet might have you waiting for a few years...or more.

Is this a regular M12 Trap 28gauge? Solid or vented rib? Age?

As much as I would like to find one for $500 or less, I don't know if that's possible unless you find a seller who just wants to clean house or doesn't know what it is.

It's doesn't say "Trap" under the SN that I remember. The rib is vented. The bolt isn't jeweled. I had the SN written down to see if I could pin down year of production but lost it when I got home. The store is a forty minute drive away and it'll be another few days before I can get another look at it. Want to actually get my hands on it and look it over really closely. I've looked at lots of pics of M 12 Traps online on some auction sites and haven't found any that look just like this one.

No such thing as a 28 gauge trap gun. The only thing that has kept the 28 from going the way of the do-do bird is skeet shooting.
