Hi fellows nutzs,

Here's my new acquisition, a Winchester model 12 in 12 ga. Made in 1953,the barrel was shortened to 21 inch,perfect for my taste! The shotgun is in nice condition,first time i have a model 12 in hand and i can say the action is smooth. I had eyes for a Norinco M1897 riot but i found that Winchester so the choice was easy :d In all,robust shotgun with very nice look, a keeper for sure.

Is that ol barrel good for modern steel shot? I have a 1200 from my dad with a 30" barrel and fixed choke... I'd like to have a smith take a good 8" off and thread it for changeable chokes... but I thought that the materials used in barrels back in the day wasn't meant for modern steel shot, just lead

No problem with the barrel itself,depend of the choke you have,might need to be opened by a gunsmith. Like if you have a full choke,a smith can open to modified or improved cylinder. From what i read, full choke dont pattern so well with steel shot and the choke can get bulge on older shotgun that have thin barrel. My model 12 was full choke but now ofc is cyl bore. There's a sticky on this forum about steel shot in older shotgun,have a read.

Well built shotgun, with the additional feature of being able to "slam fire" just by keeping the trigger depressed while cycling the slide. One question I have though is that I think i read that the latest plan for regulating firearms makes any firearm with a barrel shortened after manufacture to a lesser length than it was originally manufactured with a "prohibited weapon". Will that mean that your shotgun that is built to last many lifetimes will have t be turned in for destruction if the new legislation passes?

My Winchester will outlast any government and WILL NEVER BE TURNED IN for destruction that's it that's all.
 
Wadctrshooter why is there always someone that has know knowledge of the law makes comments on hear say or speculation or just bs . If it’s not a fact keep to yourself.
 
Have multiple model 12 in every gauge they are a great pump gun ,from my 1913 model to my 1973 "Y" classic guns..

Do you have a link to any government website / legislation , or is this just a rumour you heard ?

Once the choke is removed by knocking the end off the barrel, steel won't hurt it. You don't have to chop the barrel off to add a threaded choke, a smith could probably add threaded chokes to your dad's 30" barrel. Or just open it up to modified or light modified and you'll be fine. The choke is the issue, not the barrel steel.
 
For all you jumping on Wadctrshootr, it seems pretty clear to me that, having heard a rumour, he's asking for clarification here from anyone who knows the facts. It's called asking a question!

You can spot questions because they usually end in a question mark and they typically start with interrogative words like "who", "what", "where" and "will".

Please read the last sentence of Wadctrshootr's post again.
