I have a question about the buttstock. I have a model 12 made in 1962.We were shooting clay pigeons this afternoon and the the buttstock cracked almost in half. Shooting 2 and3/4 target shells.Are any of the other winchester models buttstocks usable or do I have to find an original?

There are numerous reproduction stocks available. They come in unfinished and pre-finished versions. You do have to buy the one for a 12 gauge, as the 20 and 16 ga model 12's were a different receiver.

The repros will run you between $130 and $200, plus shipping and tax. They're widely available from places like Western Gun Parts in Edmonton.

ETA: They are sold as "requiring fitting to individual guns", and this is true. I've done a lot of this work. The inletting usually needs to be chiselled a bit to get a proper fit. For this reason, I usually buy the unfinished version. Doing the finish allows for color matching with the fore end.
 
I've installed a 12 ga Model 12 stock on a 16 ga M12...poly choke beater shotgun. The "ring" fits perfectly. The wood is proud of the receiver a bit, but it's totally functional, although not as esthetic as a 16/20/28 stock would be as those are all the same size.
 
Should be able to find an original, they are out there. A model 25 stock will also fit perfect. As long as it's 12 gauge, not that scarce. Smaller gauges are tough to find wood for.
 
NOTE: Winchester Model 25 and Model 12 Featherweight have a different receiver profile than the Model 12. The Model 12 receiver is scalloped but the 12 FW and the 25 are not. I would imagine 12 FW and 25 stocks would not fit with the receiver being very proud of the wood. Just a FYI

I never had that problem. Put a model 12 stock on a model 25 that had been shortened about 2 inches. Fit like a new one.
 
A model 12 featherweight a model 25 and a model 12 all have the exact same butt stock there is no difference in the receiver face know matter what else is said

I will take Struff's word on the stock fit as gospel. I have to admit due to the different look of the 12 Featherweight and Model 25 receiver from the model 12 I figured the fit would be different.
