A friend has a model 12 that someone put the slide spring on the wrong end of the pump. Of course it fired one round and case is stuck in the gun. I thought at first it was the shell as it is one of the cheap aluminum base shells but on further inspection the action slide spring is at the rear of the pump instead of at the front. How do I go about getting the fired round out of the gun?

? Depress the action lock and open it ?

I am at a bit of a loss here... I don't understand why you can not open it regardless of the slide spring...

Normally after firing the slide must move forward slightly to release the action lock.... you can depress the action lock to open the action at any time..

I tried that but will not open. Pulled the trigger group out, still wouldn't open. Does it have more than one problem? The slide will not move forward to allow it to open when the trigger group is installed.

If you have the trigger group out there is another lock for the bolt that may not be releasing and is slide actuated when assembled correctly .

I can't quite visualize why it won't open now unless the slide did not travel far enough forward to engage the lock properly and now can't release it either.

Looking at the underside of the receiver with the barrel pointed away from you the left side of the receiver will be on your right side. Look at the side of the locking bolt about an inch from it's front and you will see a pin which goes through a small lever with square lugs on either end. One end will show a gap the other will be tight to the bolt. The lever pivots on the pin. With a fine bladed screw driver gently pry the end that shows an opening towards the bolt. Will the bolt release now? If so push it closed and pop the ejector out of it's retaining hole. With the ejector removed you should be able to remove the bolt (or breech block if you prefer).

I haven't encountered this problem and sure am not going to mis-assemble one of mine to see if that's the problem or not but give it a try and see.

On thinking about this I'm not sure how you will deal with the problem that the extractor is hooked onto the fired shell. You may have to use a long wooden dowel of about 1/2 " diameter (must fit into the empty case) to tap the bolt back once you are sure the lock is released. Shouldn't take much once the lock is released.

Leave the trigger group out while trying to get it open..

This really sounds like a a poorly fitted "headspace ring"... the case may have swollen ahead of this ring and the case is jammed in the chamber itself... tapping back inside the case itself while pulling back on the slide should get it open.

The option here (if it is like so many old worn out Model 12's) is to use it for a boat anchor...

Does your Model 12 have a straight action arm or does it have what is known as the dog leg variety meaning it is not in line with the bolt these were on guns for a few years and they would cause the action to lock up .after firing . It is not a chamber ring problem .
