I saved this Winchester model 12 from being taken to the RCMP to be chopped up. Its manufactured in 1939. On the barrel it says Winchester proof steel, model 12, 12 guage, for super speed & super-x 3 inch, and full. I don't know anything about them, do all model 12's break down like this one? What are these worth, I'd rate it in good condition, probably about 60% of the bluing left. The wood is sound, with no cracks, and no deep dings, although it has its marks from hunting. The bore is in excellent condition. Any help would be appreciated.

You have a Heavy Duck model 12 it is chambered for 3" cartridges. O f the 2 million or so models 12 made only about 19,000 were heavy duck guns. All models 12 take down like yours. There was a variant known as the model 25 that was a solid frame gun. I would hazard to say a gun in the shape of yours is worth 400.00 to 500.00 The heavy duck version (like yours) may add a 50.00 to 75.00 premium. You did the firearms community a good deed by keeping the horsemen away from this sweet old shotgun, well done! The case is a cool addition to the shotgun. I wouldn't sell that old girl for any amount. I am a sucker for steel and walnut.
cheers Darryl

Check out the auto sear in the Model 12 shotgun the next time you shoot it. Squeeze off the first round and keep the trigger pulled back. Pump the action, and the shotgun will fire without having to release the trigger between shots as most shotguns require. In the hands of an accomplished shotgunner, there is no faster pump gun in the world.

My Dad owns several Model 12's, and I have some registered in my name, including a MINTY Heavy Duck 12 guage, a couple more "regular" 12 guage, a 16 guage, and the .410 version known as the Model 42. All of them take down just as yours does. IMO the Model 12 is a fine shotgun and I still see several for sale at every gun show that I go to here in Calgary.

As to the above, ditto. Good old gun ... not worth a terrible lot of money, but a good old gun.

DO NOT shoot steel shot through it. Kent Impact Tungsten Matrix or Bismuth is OK
(despite the price), but nothing else !!!
