Trying to help my dad with his shotgun, when he racks the gun the action functions smothly but when he fires a shell it locks up.
The only way to get the empty shell out is to unscrew the magazine cap and take the barrel off and reasemble.
Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly apreciated.

Is it doing it when the gun is cold? Mine will do it when they get hot. Has he tried different ammo in it to see if it still does it.

Most common cause is roughness or pitting in the chamber. A thorough cleaning followed by a little buffing with a steel wool wrapped brush will usually correct the problem. In times past when shotshell were paper and waxed, the chambers usually acquired a protective coating and were more forgiving of inadequate cleaning. In marginal situations, the firing of several plastic shells will remove any lubricant allowing the expanded shell to lock in any roughness or pitting. In addition, it is my belief that the residue left by the heated plastic actually promotes rust formation.
If the problem persists, a visit to the gunsmith may be advised for a chamber honing. Also, don't forget to clean after each use especially the chamber.
Good Luck,
John S.

First check for roughness in the chamber. If the chamber is smooth, test fire with shell in the magazine. If a shell is prematurely released form the magazine and the fired case is partially withdrawn from the chamber you may have one of several different problems. The 1200 and generous manufacturing tolerances sometimes led to extreme sensitity to differing rim diameters--Try using some U.S. manufactured shotshells(IVI and some euro shells apparentlly had smaller rim diameters) If you still have difficulty, the problem may be worn shell latches or a worn magazine throat or both. If the problems have not been cleared up by the simple expedients of chamber cleaning and changing brands of shotshell, I suggest refering the 1200 to any good general gunsmith in your area with a few years of experience. Most will have had frequent practice on these shotguns.

Good Luck,
John S.
