Purchased a winchester model 1300 ranger with a known firing issue. It would have light / non existent primer strikes. I replaced the firing pin, and there was a visible difference in length. I also replaced the firing pin spring. When i tested it, 0 of three shot, not a mark on them. I swapped out the firing pin spring, and there was no primer strike on the first shot, but the next two shells went.

I then put 4 shells through it with no issues, but i am still not confident in it. I held the foreend forward when i pulled the trigger each time it functioned. I have noticed that when you pull the trigger and dont hold the foreend, the slide, and bolt seems to "release" and start backwards immediately.

Are thwre known issues like this for the 1300? Could there be something else reaulting in light / nonexistent primer strikes? Could it be the 2 3/4" shell isnt properly aligned, and maybe it needs 3"?

There are firing pins specific to the 1300. 1200 series pins do not work. Make sure you have the right pin. Yes the speedy opening of the action is normal. Sounds like the gun is now working. Give it another 25 rounds or so to see. Could be the new pin needed to loosen up a bit or move some crud out of the way.

Tried again. First one did not shoot, second and third went, fourth didnt, and fifth shot did.

I am starting to get baffled. I got the new firing pin from the local gun smith. It is about an eigth of an inch l9nger, however the rear of it is shaped like a cone where the original was shaped like a cylinder.

IIRC there were three bolt/ firing pin assemblies over time with the 1200 1300 series shotguns. The last variant involved deleting the tiny screw that held the bridge to the bolt carrier. It appears (after looking) that all parts will interchange between model 1200 and 1300 as long as the complete assembly is changed. I think BOOMER is on to something in that the pin is being hindered or partially block. Could it be your smith installed a 1200 series pin in a 1300 series bolt assembly? PICS : different assemblies l to r : late 1300 transition 1300 1200. 1300 pin 1200 pin

I think he means the lug recesses in the barrel extension. If they or the bolt lugs become worn (that takes a long time and a million rounds) it will effect headspace and firing pin issues will follow. Usually in the form of over or under rotation of the bolt which will bind the firing pin.
