Hello all,

I'm looking for assistance in sourcing ammunition for my Winchester Model 1886 - 45-90 caliber rifle. Currently, there's no retail resources in Ontario carrying this calibre of ammunition or brass, every resource appears to be in western Canada with shipping and services costs more than the ammo.

I'm simply looking for 45-90 ammo in 300 gr. or 405 gr. bullets for sale or direction in sourcing the bullets, brass and reloading dies (if) or loaded ammo by experienced reloader.

Any assistance will be appreciated,

You could use 45/70 dies set back to load 45/90 but you would essentially be neck sizing, may or may not work in an 1886.

A quick google search will find a reputable dealer that has a 45/90 Redding die set in stock, for, under $400 before shipping ($20 each) and you will have dies and brass, bullets are the same as 45/70.

It is not a cheap gun, getting it to run is not going to be crazy expensive really.
 
You can shoot a 45-70 round in the 45-90 but with the different twist rates and excessive free bore accuracy would likely suffer greatly. But with all the components and dies available why wouldn't you use the proper ammo. JMHO
 
.45-70 can be fired in a .45-90 without issue but you are going to get a ring around the chamber that needs to be cleaned. Accuracy is no worse than shooting .38's out of a .357. Twist rate is no big deal with 300 grain bullets or so. The slower twist of the .45-90 might start complaining with the heavyweights.
 
Sourcing loaded ammunition seems more difficult than I expected. Shooting 45-70 out of my 1886 chambered in 45-90 is not an option. I'll continue searching for any Canadian options with potential for reloading. Thank you for all your responses.
