Winchester Model 1895 7.62mm Russian Contract Rifle

thank you! and thats part of why i like them. things like the Finnish capture rifles that never saw a refurbishment and come with an interesting story are my favorite collect. those pretty museum pieces just dont have that character about them

Most of the 1895 in North America came out of Spain (aid for the Republican side from the Soviets), surplus from the Civil War. They were imported by Sam Cummings aka Interarms.

if i was so lucky to stumble on one of these rifles what would be a ballpark price range to expect to pay?

Lots. But buying them is easy, the hard part is finding one.

I had to import mine with matching bayonet, scabbard and frog from Europe. It cost more than 6k landed. But it is un-messed with and 100% Russian. Nobody but the Russians and Soviets used it. It's a beauty too. It was actually found originally in a crate of Russian (non capture) 1891 Mosins.

Most I have ever seen were SCW or SA marked. Or didn't even leave the USA at all. Un-messed with Russian ones are the holy grail of sorts.

The M1895 was also chambered in .405 Win and was quite popular in Africa. A friend used one in .30-40 Krag as a deer rifle. There's sure a lot of metal in motion when you open the action.

There sure is. Although way more reliable in the mud than I thought.

That's only one way of testing a rifle. If you get any mud in the action when it is open your basically screwed, especially when you consider how difficult it is to strip in comparison to a M1891.

Absolutely, the take-down is a nightmare on a work bench, let alone in the field.
