Winchester Model 37A single shot twelve gauge, I got this gone along time ago but never shot it. Wondering if it is a rare model 37A since the barrel is 36" long. Never seen any literature on this gun with such a long barrel or I am measuring it wrong. Anybody know how to truly measure a gun barrel properly? Thanks in advance.

Hi
IMO rare maybe to someone in the US but especially here down east the 36" barrel or goose barrel as we called them were actually quite common back in the day with the young waterfowl hunters getting started
It does add a little to the value but can still locate very minty ones for under 200 since the fixed full choke cannot be used with steel and few want to carry a 36" barrel upland hunting. Also most that do collect these single shots seem want the cooey 84. I have one made by cooey with a 36" somewhere that was my brothers 1st shotgun and must be 40 years since it was fired
.
Still a nice gun you have if you can find a use for it.
Think they may have also made some 12ga 32 and 34" but that may be wrong 30" were everywhere
Cheers

The Winchester/Cooey guns were commonly found with 36 in tubes, but its nothing that can't be fixed with a hacksaw, a muzzle facing tool, and a reamer and tap for choke tubes. To correctly measure the length of the barrel, run a wood dowel or a cleaning rod down the barrel until it stops against the breach. Mark the rod with a piece of tape at the muzzle, withdraw the rod, and measure the indicated length with a tape measure.

the. good old goose gun .thy are good for turkey shoots .but thy will not let us use them anymore 30 inch and under at are shoots.still a very good gun for turkey hunting as thy normaly throw a very good pattern with shot sizes 4 5 6 . .give her a try with some turkey loads as that is realy all thy are good for anymore .no steel shot with that 36 inch full choke. I have the Winchester model 39A, I reload my empty shells with black powder, paper wads and 7.5/8 recycled shots and get awesome group patterns at 50 yards. No malfunction since I got it a year ago. Love this great shooter.
