OK Folks;
I want to have a rib installed on a Winchester 42 field grade shotgun. It can be a ventilated or solid rib. Does anybody in Canada do this work. Any suggestions ? Thanks in advance.

You may want to re-think that. Model 42's are collector grade shotguns. Adding an aftermarket rib will drop its value by half. There's a plain barreled M42, just like your's, on one of the U.S. sites. The guy is asking $1695US.

Sunray:
Your point is well taken! I would never "alter" or "add on to" an original gun of any type that has CONDITION !! I should have explained in my original post that my model 42 has seen field use. Bluing wear at the front of the receiver indicates that it has been carried quite a bit. It also has a few very small nicks and dings here and there that I believe could be polished out. Otherwise, I would describe it over all as good. Believe me, if I thought for one minute that I could get that kind of money that you stated (especially with the economic times being what they are), I would grab the money and forget the project!! Again your point is well taken. Thanks, Lloyd

Even in the condition you say it is , don't do it.
You could sell that and buy a new 410 pump or even
a nice o/u shot gun, thou I must say that I never understood
the value in these, and I am a dealer.

You can get a Browning BPS in .410 complete with vent rib and screw in chokes brand new for about $575. Given what a GOOD gunsmith would charge to solder on a rib to your 42 and then reblue it (and it would have to be reblued) this would be a cheaper alternative.

Look up the values of the 42 - one in the condition you describe would probably surprise you!

If you want gun totally redone..install rib,new wood and complete re-blue for $1200.00 US check out www.simmonsguns.com/ .

Been thinking about doing my 12,16 and 42. Simmons is the company Winchester used for any upgrades,so yours would be "returned to factory" condition. If anything price would increase.

You can ask what ever you like for a particular article something is worth what the previous one sold for model citizen is realistic about value this guns value is more in the range of 900.00 to 1200.00 cnd. and yes a Simmons rib would not decrease the value it may not increase it eaither

You would certainly make it more "shootable" with a Simmons rib and a proper buttstock.
The half-assed pistol grip on the original 42's are an abomination. The "little guns" are pretty nice when all done up.

I know that Jason at Gunco in Ottawa has installed vent ribs on old model 12's for me so I would imagine he can do a 42.

model 42 project

Well folks, thanks for the input. I appreciate it. I guess I should contemplate this one a little further. I already have 2 model 42's that were purchased with Simmons ribs that were already installed by previous owners. The two I have already have after market pistol grip stocks. I was thinking that the third could have a straight grip English stock. As far as exporting the rib work to Simmons goes, is that possible given all the export/import restrictions that have come into play in the last few years? Regards, MC
