Winchester Model 42

Hey guys,

My grandpa got a hold of a Win Model 42, non vent rib. The stock has been replaced with a trap style one and the finish/fit is impeccable.

I'll get some pics up later tonight.

He wants to sell it so he's asked me if I could get a rough value. Anyone here have any ideas? Much appreciated guys.

Depending on overall condition of bluing ? and what the BBl length, and choke is will efect value stock replacement may inhance value or decrease value but being a basic field grade gun it would be in the $800-$1,200.00 range. everybody will jump on for pics but if bluing is 90%-95% $1000.00 -$1,200.00 if bluing is 50%-70% $800-$900
 
Pics will be up later tonight, I was wrong it IS a vent-rib model. The bluing as absolutely astonishing I'd say 97%

The stock is a monte carlo style, not sure of the wood type.

This gun was apparently bought new form his friend. It literally has no more than 25 shells ever put through it. It looks BNIB actually.

EDIT: Choke is full and it's a 3"

Agree for a standard grade.The serial number has to be checked 1st to nail down the year then the grade. They made 5 grades of this gun and vent rib is not the norm on a standard grade unless someone added a simmions rib. Stock is going to hurt value big time if it proves to be a high end gun. The high end ones have sold for 5-10,000 in the us pending condition.

5000 for the high end is common in the US. have to run but here is one that sold for over 10,000 in 2007

A few months ago you told me my model 12 28ga was not worth 5000 either but it sold for 7500 state side. It is a different market totally in the US for guns like this.I would never sell a model 42 in canada. take care;)
 
I would not say it is a common occurrence for them to sell at those prices but there are many listed for those prices. Also the grade that sells for that price are not common in Canada .

Agree my friend. I have not found any real market however for them or any winchester shotguns in canada regardless of grade. This one we really have no idea what it is. If I was guessing I would say it is one of the new ones that were reproduced. It was grade that sold my 28ga for the bucks it did. I could not get 2500 for it up here. I am lucky being born state side with two brothers still living there.
Did you ever get that model 12 trap?? you were looking for???
 
Agreed. Gun prices in the US are nothing like here. Most model 12's here you pretty much have to give away, unless like you say it is a specific gauge and model. Even then they won't bring US prices here. Same as older double barrels. Even though the market is down on those in the US, they still usually bring more than here. If I had a fair dollar gun that I wanted to sell, I too would look into selling state side.
 
I did get the model 12 I was looking for but I bought it on the usa side and brought into Canada hence my point about high shotguns in Canada lots of discussion but not many around. Update i just bought a beautiful model 21 from a fellow in western Canada,

Just curious though, do you think the model 21 would have brought more money in the US? I bought a very nice model 23 and according to guys I communicated with in the US, they said it would be almost twice as much as I paid here. But who knows until you actualy try to sell (which I'm not).

Yes and what many think are high end are restocked field guns. You cannot do much better than a model 21 is it s 12ga??. I don't hesitate to buy state side either if it is what I want. Especially now after working with Clay from prophet river on various items. It is painless.
Not a collector but I think my next one will be a 7600 7mm08 in the blue laminated. Been watching them on gun broker for a while and never see them in canada in 7mm08 let alone laminated. take care

I'm no expert but from my experience of selling off a large part of my collection ( over 100 guns) in the past 7 years everything would have sold for more in the US . The ones I got a real burning on was my unfired ducks unlimited guns. Many I got less than I paid 30 years ago for them.Handguns I made money on which i thought was strange. Rest I probally broke even or made 10-15%
In my opinion guns are not an investment like I thought they were or I collected the wrong ones or sold off during tough times.At least not in Canada.
My apologies to the OP for getting off track. Post some pics of your model 42 so we can see what it is.

So it IS US manufactured, the only physical detractor the the overall appearance of the gun is the small pea sized rub in the bluing noticeable in the one picture. Other than that it is pristine.

Odd after doing a bit of homework it seems as if this gun would bring a high high dollar in the states but just nowhere near as much here. Personally I don't think he should sell it, I think it will only appreciate in value.
 
Original Model 42's always will bring more money in the future, just because it is one of those must have strange ducks! I know I bought mine out of nastalgia, but my nephew wants to kill some partridge with it here shortley, since we went and test paterned it, very tight FULL ,great for North Western Ontario bush shooting. If I were you ,tell Gramps to hold onto it, also not the best time to sell our guns in the US, wait till there money and economy pick up hopefully in the next 5 years, cheers Dale Z!
