I have an old Winchester Model 54. While cleaning I have relaeased the firing pin, into the forward position, When trying to re-insert the bolt the end that is usually pulled back now hits.
-How can I recock or reset the firing pin into the rear(cocked) position??

Using smooth jaw pliars or vice grips, grab the "cocking piece" and pull it to the rear and rotate the assembly to the correct position. Remove the pliars.

wow that seems a good way to scratch and possibly dammage the bolt. The only thing to grab is the small catch (1/8 of an inch)that sticks out of the bolt. Grabbing it will surely damage it or the bolt itself.
Is this the only/easy way??

You won't damage the cocking piece if you use smooth jaws as suggested or soft jaws like rubber or brass. Guntech gave you the easier way to do it. You can also hold the bolt in your left hand and hold the bolt sleave (where the cocking piece is and the safety is attached) in you right hand. Twist the sleave clockwise until it cocks. It will be stiff since you're compressing the firing spring.

Another option is to put it (cocking piece) up against a piece of hard wood and pull down on the bolt. This will push the cocking piece back and you can rotate the shroud to it's proper position.

Gunrunners suggestion worked. I was very leary to grab the cocking piece with even brass pliers. It seemed like such a small piece and so much force.
but using some hardwood I made a "key" that would hold it firmly while letting me push and turn.
Thanks for all your help!!!
