I have a Huskqvarna 30-06 bolt action that my Dad picked up in Africa quite a few years ago. How do I figure out the model ? Or is there even a model type ? The serial number is 18.... If that helps ?

I also have a Winchester model 54 ( 1927). Is there much of a demand for collectors ? It has a Williams peep sight on it and I have found a couple in the states with the same sight. Does anyone know if this was a standard option ?

Thanks

How about a picture of the HVA action?
Did you check out the sticky with husqvarna ####? Lots of info in there.

Well here are the pics. Actually I didn't notice the #### thread. I will have a look. I should have looked there first I guess. After having a quick look it appears to be a 1640/1600 because of the slide safety. It shoots like a charm with any ammo you put down it.

Now what about this model 54 ? Do people collect Winchesters up here like they do down south ? It appears there may only be about 15000 still around and of those very few unmodified.

54's are a little collectible but condition is everything... They were never meant for a scope so a peep was commonly used. Quality pictures accurately showing the condition will help with a value.

Mine is not very pretty. It was hunted with, plain and simple. The bluing is worn in some areas and the stock is beat up. The bore is clean with not pitting and it shoots very accurately. It appears looking on the American sites, that even in the condition mine is in they are not worth a whole hell of a lot. I may try to sell it but I guess it won't matter. I was hoping it could go to someone who collects Winchesters and would appreciate it more than me.

Regarding the 54 at least you still have that peep sight to sell with the gun. The inletting needed to fit the stock leaves such an ugly hole if it has been removed. It sounds like you have a hunter there with little collectible value. pics would help tho.

A receiver sight supplied with the rifle in 1927 would have been either a Lyman or a Redfield. Not even sure if Williams was making receiver sights then or if the company existed at that time. If it appears to be glossy and possibly an aluminum framed sight it is much later and is an add on. Still a good sight though but they came in at least three types (micrometer adjust is the Williams Foolproof), (slip screw slide adjust , is the 5D sight) and then there was the later Guide sight which fit on like a rear top mount scope base

What caliber is the 54, I have a 7x57 built in 1928 with peep and unmodified.

Ok this I can tell you from my research. Yours is worth a truckload so to speak. 7X57 is one of the rarest of calibers for this gun along with a few others.

My peep sight may have been added after, not sure but it is a Williams. I will get off my ass and put up some pics.

Ok here are the pictures of my gun. I did some research and it appears that although the 30-06 is one of the more common calibers there are in fact few of these in Canada. I would like to know how many members have one and in what caliber. Apparently they came in a 9x57 which is quite rare. Mine is used as my Grandpa got it as a tip when he was guiding outside of Golden, B.C.. He used it but it wasn't his go to rifle. That one I am keeping for sure. I don't know why but for me two of the pics are upside down?

Here is mine, 1926 mfg I think it was, 30 Gov't 06 stamped. It has not been fired much at all, nice and tight yet. Still has the case color on the safety too. Already got a bear with it. :D

Custom scope mount that came with it.

Seems not too hard to locate them in 06 or 270, but finding any with condition is very hard. These guns were bought by folks who worked them hard.

Looks like an honest old hunting rifle. If I were selling it I would list it for $550-$650. There were not a lot of 54's made but their value as collectable Winchesters is considerably lower than the pre 64 model 70's. I think your rifle is basically a hunter. If I owned it I would be chucking the Williams peep sight and adding a vintage Redfield or Lyman peep sight, an aluminum sight just doesn't match the old rifle to me. BTW, yours is in really fine shape, Noel, good examples of collectable versus hunter condition model 54's.

Noel yours is awesome. I have not found too many that are in that good of shape and haven't been refinished.

I am not sure when the peep sight was added, but I believe my grandpa added it. I think it only had the open sights as original equipment. As for selling it....well I don't know. I will have to think about that.

Noel, is that a Weaver 330 on the old mount?

Yessir it is, just a post reticle no crosswire.

Jacky, thanks for the kind words. There is one extra hole in the rear bridge but it was too nice to pass up. There is an extra checkering piece on the tang but I think the finish is factory other than that.

I am hoping to locate a pre war redfield two piece mount set up so I can put a period correct kahles on it and cover up the hole.

And to Rod, I concur it sure is a great little rifle. Located some of that oil you mentioned before to keep her tip top. Thanks again!
