Winchester Model 70 (1954) Featherweight 308 win

Pre 64 model 70”s are based on the 1917 Enfield not the Mauser . The follower from a 17 engield is the same as the pre 64 70 . Here is one that very few people know the extractor from a 17 Enfield is the same as the previous 64 70 . Also the angle of the breech of the bbl is similar to the 17
. The model 54 share even more similarity’s

Struff,

I never realized that, but I see what you mean! Didn't the Springfield also have a coned breech before the 1917 ever did too though?

Fantastic rifle! I don't think that adjective has been used yet. Fact of the matter is, it is a fantastic rifle and in beautiful shape. Congratulations.

Thank you Boomer! Looking forward to getting the trigger rebuilt and tuned up and really seeing what it can do. Going to take it to the range and try it out today as is though. Just to see. One other surprise with this rifle though, wow it is tight chambered. I mean tight. Even brass from other bolt guns full length resized with a Lee is a super snug fit. Think I am gonna have to find a narrower die, or maybe a small base die.

Thank you everyone else, as well!

Might not be as comfortable to scope as most modern rifles though but with the right combination of mounts...we'll see.

Not to be picky but.....

M1917 Enfield
DescriptionThe M1917 Enfield, the "American Enfield", formally named "United States Rifle, cal .30, Model of 1917" is an American modification and production of the .303-inch Pattern 1914 Enfield rifle developed and manufactured during the period 1917–1918. Wikipedia
Action: Modified Mauser turn bolt
Barrel length: 26 in (660 mm)
Length: 46.3 in (1,180 mm)
In service: 1917–present
Manufacturer: Winchester Repeating Arms Company; Remington Arms; Eddystone Arsenal
Maximum firing range: 5,500 yd (5,029 m) with.30 M1 Ball cartridge
Effective firing range: 600 yd (549 m)

Like the 1903 Springfield, the M1917 actually used the basic Mauser M98 bolt action design coupled with a few modifications. Due to the original P13 action being designed for a high-powered .276 Enfield round with a larger diameter case than the .30-06 Springfield, the magazine capacity for the smaller diameter .30-06 Springfield was six rounds, although stripper clips held only five cartridges.
