I recently acquired a like new Winchester Model 70 carbine chambered in .308 Win. (barrel is stamped Winchester Model 70 Carbine, along with caliber) It has a "G" prefix so it must've been manufactured by USRAC sometime after 1981 rather than during the classic Winchester era. I haven't been able to nail down a more firm date than that, nor have I been able to find out just how many carbines were produced in that era.

Does anybody have a link to a good site where I can research this more fully or do you know off-hand? Any help would be appreciated as this little carbine is certainly growing on me. Very light and handy with good balance and certainly a joy to carry all day afield if necessary. I haven't seen too many in this configuration, so I'm kind of interested to know more about its evolution.

They didn't make very many, I bought my son one ins 270 for his first rifle. It was buuilt in 1987, they made them in 30-06, 270, 308 and 250 savage.

The one I had wasn't a very good shooter.

Yeah, the rifle I picked up as a 20" light sporter barrel. Heats up quickly, but with handloads I'm getting a little under MOA performance.
