Hi I have a new Winchester M70 Featherweight in .308. I love the rifle but am not fond of the stamped sheet metal extractor collar. Does anyone know of a higher quality collar that would fit?

I don't know if Williams makes one but perhaps the older pre64 collar would fit. I can't say I don't like the collar on my newer M70 but I certainly don't like the gas shield/bolt stop attached to the collar, they work but it doesn't turn my crank.

The pre-64 collar is a stamped sheet metal piece as well and always was. I like the gas shield; not so much because it's great as a gas shield (I prefer to never test it out) but because it protects the locking lug from battering by the bolt stop during rapid cycling. Not a big deal unless one does a lot of rapid fire. Keep in mind, without the shield, the bolt stop is a bit short and the bolt will cycle rearward a bit more than one might like. Regards, Bill

jbmauser and leeper, you are both incorrect about loosing the gas shield if you change to the pre 64 collar. The pre 64 collar retains the shield/bolt stop in the short action calibers like the 308 Win, but it is not such a loose rickety affair, the pre 64 stop is fixed onto the collar in a way that it is very solid and does not wobble around like the new one, neither would the bolt be coming back any further than usual since it still retains metal between the lug and action bolt stop, really no comparison between the old and the new.
Hope this helps.

Thanks bigbull. So is the pre 64 collar stamped as well but just better constructed? Do you know if it would fit the new bolts? I contacted Williams about a collar but have not heard back yet. The shield/stop on my new one does wobble around alot. Seems flimsy on an otherwise well made gun.

Yes I would say it is stamped as well but better constructed, you would have to see it to understand that the stop is a solid piece of machined steel that is attached to the collar. I don't know if it would fit the new bolts, if I had to guess I would say yes although I have never done a side by side comparison. The new ones do wobble around but work fine, just wonder like you said why they couldn't do something more appealing.

Bigbull,
In the pre-64 rifles the piece was not designed as a gas shield but was a block intended to limit bolt travel for shorter cartridges. Standard actions for 30/06 length cartridges did not use the block. If I recall correctly (always a concern) the block was actually attached to the collar rather than just being hooked beneath it as is the new gas shield. Really kind of a moot point since the block used in the pre-64 for short cartridges would be unusable in the new actions; it would not allow sufficient bolt travel in either action length. Of course, one could modify it to do so. Regards, Bill.
