Looking for opinions on this rifle. I inherited it and it is in excellent shape with a very clean bore. Looks hardly used if at all.

Is it ok for entry level long distance shooting?

The shooter has more to do with it then the rifle itself. Do you plan on scoping it or shooting iron sights?

I have the Springfield 3rd Generation Govenment Model 4-14x56.
"The 3rd Generation scope is identical to the 2nd Generation Scope with the addition of an illuminated Target Tracking™ green reticle with 7 individual brightness settings. This feature allows a shooter to clearly see the reticle on the target in extreme, near dark conditions. The choice of professionals around the world as the ultimate tactical telescopic sight."

So what do you think?:shotgun:

Thanks Max for the vote of confidence, I think.
I am going to take it out this weekend to the range. Never shot it before but I want to sight it in and I was told that I should use factory at first. I will look for a good reload workup however.

Keep it and enjoy you will kick your but if you sell it, its like land they don't make anymore. and if its a pre 64 it is one of the finnest rifles ever made.

If this is pre '64 with controlled round feed, then I'd say you have one of the best short actions ever for a precision rig. It's too bad that most aftermarket companies concentrate on the Remington, and don't offer much for the 70 action.

Leg said it all. The M70 is a fabulous platform. I've owned 2 M70 Heavy Barreled Varmint shooters and then 2 more Stealth models. Loved them all !!

I've had to turn to Remington M700's for my competition (Precision) purposes because of the availability of aftermarket parts to tweak the rigs to fit my wife and myself. There is just that much more support for the M700 even if (IMHO) the Winchester M70 is a great platform: flat bottomed reciever, tool-less bolt disassembly, 3 position safety, built in recoil lug, well positioned bolt handle for rapid fire 'fanning' of the bolt, holds 5 rounds INSIDE the magazine, The Short Action version will accept longer seated bullets in the magazine. Sadly there ain't no more Winchester bangsticks.

You are very lucky to inherit a fine piece of boomstick!!

I have a stock Winchester .308 National Match rifle. Long action, long rear bridge, cut for charger loading, original Redfield sights, made ca 1970, excellent end to end. Last time I shot it for a basic zero at Connaught at 300m, first was a 4, corrected, next was a 5, corrected, last 3 were Vs. The Redfield Mk. VIII rear sight leaves a bit to be desired, though. Eighth minute clicks, plain scale, no Vernier. You sure have to enjoy counting clicks to use it.

Thanks guys. I think I'll keep it. :dancingbanana: As was said, I don't want to kick my ass later.

I need to get used to it and the Springfield scope. I hear the scope doesn't have the optics of the VarXIII, but I still used to sell for $1000 at one time. I'll take some time and get used to both.
