It's important for those wishing to purchase pre-64 Model 70's to know which models came from the factory, as standard issue, with recoil pads as altered versions with cut stocks and recoil pads lower the value of a factory correct gun. The solid red pad was the standard pad until around 1960 when Winchester began the change to the webbed version. Solid red pads were still seen beyond 1960 until supplies ended. (running changes).
Winchester built these models with factory installed recoil pads:
1. 375 H&H
2. 458 Win Mag
3. 338 Win Mag
4. 300 Win Mag
5. 264 Win Mag Featherweight Westerner. . (this is the only Featherweight to be factory correct with a recoil pad)
Some of the early 375's came with Noshoc and Hawkin pads but most had the solid red pad. Other pads were also offered with later versions. The Silvers Pad was a popular one and resembled the Winchester solid red pad. Also, leather covered pads were offered on special order.
On special order, for an additional charge, Winchester would install a recoil pad on other M70's but be careful paying full price if not accompanied with correct paper work.
