Anybody here own/hunt with the bolt action Winchester model 70 ranger.
Remember them the plain jane non checkered model 70.For some reason it popped in my head and I was just wondering how popular these rifles are.
I had one for more than 20 years, in 7mmMag. Shot real well, served me very well also. Had it bead blasted and blued for a matt finish, fitted it into a black synthetic stock. It didn't turn out too bad. Sold it 3 years ago without a scope for $700.00
I had a M70, think it was a "ranger"? or maybe it was the 670? well it was a plain push feed 30-06 with a blind magazine. Shot very well except the trigger wasnt the best when I had it
Have mine down to 1.5" groups with a 180 grain Remington Spitzer and some IMR 4320. Hoping to tighten things up with some Hornady 165 grain SST and Varget or H414 on my next days off.
I have one in 30-06 and it is a tack driver. I recently refinished the stock and found some, what I believe, is tiger maple underneath. Looks pretty cool.
The only push feed I have had was a Ranger, in 243. It shot pretty good, as Tod mentioned the trigger is in need of help.
I traded it for a VXIII within a few months of using the rifle, best deal I ever made.
FWIW Mark, I have always read two piece bases are stronger and more accurate as well. Toss a handful of salt over your shoulder with this as I've never had an opportunity to try a one piece and a two piece set up back to back.
I'm on my 2nd M70 Ranger. The first was a .30-06 with a blind mag and plain bolt. One night when I was away from home, somebody decided to help themself to it, so the insurance company bought me a new one. It is a .270 that came with a hinged floorplate and a knurled bolt. I've since had it checkered and added a walnut forend tip and grip cap. Its my main hunting rifle and its come to be known as "Blondie" .
Just curious; I've always viewed my push-feed M70 Ranger as a Featherweight put into a beechwood stock. Is this a fair description?
Mine has always performed flawlessly as a hunting rifle. Although the skinny barrell does heat up pretty fast, after which the groups do suffer. Then again, I've never had to fire 2 mags at a deer
