A buddy asked me to post this for him:

Has anyone had any experience with the Winchester Model 70 Ultimate Shadow? I've had my eyes on one for awhile now but couldn't find one anywhere (phoned 15 different stores/shops in Canada and they all told me there wasn't one in Canada). Finally found one today in .300 wsm for $770. Just wondering if they are worth the money or should I go to a Remington 700 or Weatherby. I've read all over on them, but just cant find any personal experience with them. We all know Winchester made good guns 20+years ago, but not sure if the new guns are any good or not. Let me know.
Thanks in advance.

If anyone has any experience with these guns, whether a buddy has one, you have one etc. please post it up and lets hear it.

I havent handled the ultimate shadow but have handled and shot several of the new (FN produced) model 70s (shadow, sporter, and safari express models). In general the new Winchester 70s are very good. Smooth action, good feeding, reasonable or better accuracy, good fit and finish, and a decent trigger. I'm seriously considering getting a model 70 extreme weathet myself.

The new manufacture Model 70's are great. Some guys ##### about the trigger being different but I like it just fine. You will find the QC on it to be held to a higher standard than the 700 SPS line, IMO. Nothing wrong with the Model 70, Model 700, or the Vanguard.

Just bought one in 300 WSM, the stainless version. I haven't had it to the range yet but as far as fit and function I am very impressed so far. It appears to be a very nice rifle. Based on my experience with the stainless featherweight Mod 70 version I bought last year it should be a shooter.:D

Whats the recoil like for the .300 wsm??

Fear not with the purchase of a new model 70. They are top notch. Its almost impossible to find a better made rifle for the same money. Before I got my 30-06 featherweight last christmas I handled some 700's, browning, savage, and cz. The only thing that was on par was the cz. Everything else felt like it was made of tin and not steel.

I have both right now. My personal reasons for picking a WSM this time were, 24 inch barrel vs 26 inch barrel - the 24 handles better to me and no loss in performance. The gun itself fit me very well and was slightly lighter and just handled very well, it should be a great stalking rifle. Probably the most important reason I bought it was it gave me a reason to buy a new gun!
I find that the 300 wsm is becomming more popular lately, I can even find it at my local Canadian Tire and they have a very limited offering. I haven't bought brass yet but I don't believe it will be an issue. I bought a set of dies within 1 week of buying the gun with no problems.

I have no experience with the Shadow but my FWT FN Winchester M70 is fantastic.
Mine is in 30-06 long action and it's smooth as butter.

For my money the new FN Winchesters are the best gun you can buy under a grand.

I think I'll be adding a 300win in the Extreme Weather edition as soon as the wife allows it.
Let us know which way you go.

The Win. M-70's have always been excellent rifles with some production periods being better than others. The lasest ones out of SC are some of the best yet in quality and value for your money. I have shot and hunted M-70's since the early seventies without issue.

As for your second dilemma of the 300 WSM vs 300 WIN MAG. Let me put it this way the good ole 300 WIN MAG will be around long after you and I have left the top side of the earth. We are not so sure about the 300 WSM and it's derivatives. So stick with the 300 WIN MAG lots of ammo, and reloading components plus a proven track record.

This thread needed pictures. Ultimate Shadow Stainless 300 wsm, Featherweight Stainless 270 wsm in a Boyd's stock (didn't want to scratch the walnut stock - Yes I am one of those guys :)) New Haven Stainless 270 win.

Well me and my buddy went to WSS in regina yesterday and they didn't have a huge choice of rifles, however myself, I almost brought home a Remington 700 CDL Classic Deluxe in .300 win mag. But for $900 I figured it could wait a bit longer..

Here's my Ultimate Shadow in .300 WSM that I bought used a couple years ago. Now sits in a McMillan. No issues with the rifle. Shot a moose with it last fall.
