Winchester Model 70 "UPDATE"!

How 'bout some better pics of yours?

Does it say "varmint police" on the barrel or the stock?

No, but when I took the stock off it says in the barrel channel "M70 Varmint Police" on the barrel it says "Winchester Model 70 Heavy Barrel Cal .308Win"

IMO, you have a heavy varmint rifle. The stock, (which looks like a regular winchester injection molded stock) is stamped "varmint police" because it was used on more than one model, or they added a second sling stud and called it a police model...

Definitely not a Stealth stock...

I don't know about that. I seem to recall some pics of the "latest" incarnations of the Stealth (in both catalogs and adverts) wearing stocks with checkering on them - a far cry from the HS Precision (PSS looking) style with the wider forend... On that note though, I don't remember Winchester ever producing/commercially marketing a "Police" version of the Model 70. If someone has some mail order catalogs from say two or three years ago sitting around, I'm almost certain you'll find the Stealths with the cut checkered stocks in those... Just my $.02

Well I am confused lol..

it DEFINATELY say's M70 Police Varmint in the barrel channel when I take the stock off, and people are telling me that there is no such model made?

Person I got it off of was .mil at one time and told me this rifle was used by a swat team as a sniper rifle as such.

I just meant that it looks like a heavy varmint model. Whether or not it was used as a sniper rifle, I don't know. If it was stamped as such on the barrel, and not just inside the plastic stock, then you might have something there.

I'd just shoot the hell out of it and not worry...:cheers:

blargon, I am mainly concerned to know exactly what model it is for when or if I go to sell it so I can place an exact value on it. I know the pictures dont do it, but it does look great in real life and is supposed to be extremely accurate. I also wanted to know what model it was so I knew exactly what it had for barrel twist. I am now thinking 1:9
 
.308? Unlikely that it's a 1:9 twist - maybe more likely a 1:12 (if factory original)... Curious about the "Police Varmint" moniker though. It'd be great to see some pics of the markings. If it shoots well, and you're happy with it and the way it looks, I'd say call it a day. I wouldn't get too caught up in trying to find it's "value". Gun prices (both new and used) fluctuate so much that what it's "worth" today might be totally out of the question (both for the better or worse) later on. I've had numerous pieces pass through my hands, and I can tell you right now, there isn't much sense in buying a firearm as an investment piece - not in this day and age that is... It's a good looking rifle, shoot it, and be happy...

Lol! Pics are working now... Funny how they spelled "Varmint" with no "n"?!? Not what I was expecting the stock to look like on the inside. If that's the stock that Winchester's final batches of Stealths came in, they sure found a way to cut costs - as it looks like that's an injection molded plastic affair vs. the older HS Precision style ones with the bedding block.

Double Lol! I didn't actually notice it on the first page, but the pics that John Y Cannuck and ZuluMike ARE of the same one I saw in print a while back. The difference I noticed (from what I recall of the original Model 70 Heavy Barrel Target, and the original Stealths) was that the stocks on the Stealth II had the cut checkering around the palm swell - whereas the originals didn't. Correct me if I'm wrong ZuluMike, but I believe the Stealth II's still retained the bedding block in the stocks. Northwoodslivin, your stock seems to be made entirely of injection molded plastic - and appears to have a standard forearm rather than the usual wider, beaver tail style that most varmint guns are equipped with... Very interesting....

ya I know.. which is why I am trying to find out what is going on here. The barrel is not tight in the channel. And my buddy said it groups very well. So I dont know what it is.. I do know it is a heavy barrel model 70. Exactly what model..... I dont know.. I have tried finding a model 70 varmint police version but cant see nothing in my searches.

I just want to know what the exact model is so if I we're to sell it I would know what to advertise it as, as well as it's value. But more-so the exact model name.

this is not one of the final batches according to the serial number.
