I am probably going to buy this rifle very soon. I have found one in .308 now as well as .300 win mag.

My question is this. Is the XTR any different from the classic.

The one I found is an XTR featherweight and I am not sure if it is the same as the classic featherweight.

Please advise if you know.

Thanks.

Its just trim differences and maybe types of wood used

XTR's are rifles from the late 80's IIRC By the 90's they dropped the XTR business

For some reason they tried a name change, but I guess it did do much for their sales
All in all they are the same rifle

XTR is likely a push feed--designation refers to finish, checkering etc. Classic is the modern controlled feed action. Both have their supporters and detractors. I have several of each and don't find much difference as far as field use.

FWIW, 44Bore

Yeah, way different from the 'classic'... the XTR is a push feed, made in the 80's...

I've had a Win 70 XTR .30-06 for years & love it. Picked it up because it had a 24" barrel with rifle sites. Originally, it was my backup rifle to my .300 Win Mag on away moose hunts. Deadly accurate with 165 grain bullets...

30-06 is my caliber of choice, but I cant find one and I need it for hunting season!

There is very little difference between the 308 and the 30-06. Unless you have a hardon for the 30-06 buy the 308

Lighter rifle and shorter action!

I havent got a real hardon for it. I just cant seem to get any reply's on the gun from the guys I emailed.

I am running out of time and I am about ready to 'settle' for somehting I dont truly want which is never good.

06 is only really better with 200 gr bullets and heavier. How many people are using 200 gr bullets?

Only shot 3 moose with my 308 and none took a step after being hit. (180 gr bulllets)

I much prefer short action to long action.

The XTR from the '80s are very good push feed rifles, they had fixed bolt wobble with a hook on one of the lugs, and had a different firing pin nut/ring,than the first post'64s. Stock is bit thin even for me, and Winchester blueing isn't as good as the Dupont on the Remingtons.Used prices on p/f M-70s are lower than M-700s,and '72 onward ,good rifles.
