Winchester Model 71 ####

It's great to know the history of a rifle. I don't know anything about mine other than it's awesome and was expensive. I'll have to create my own history with it I guess

Speechless....
I am VERY sentimental

When I get my ducks in a row and sign up for a team membership I will post up my .348 ammo collection-I've got something special for .348 fans !!

Looking forward to that. To reload, an item or component I've been looking for is some Winchester bullets, the 250gr Silvertips to be exact. ;)One day.............

Here is a few pics that span my factory .348 selection. There is a void that needs to be filled by a box of 150's alas maybe one day.

This Lee Loader was an ebay score. Puzzled by the inscription under the box top I went on an investigation and found out the late owners name and was also given his surviving sisters phone number, way cool.

These hung above the door of my Grandparent's cottage and were left there when they sold it in 1980 when they retired and left Ontario for B.C. This was the last moose my Grandfather shot and he used his Model 71 to take it. He took this one in 1971.

I mentioned some time ago now that I would post some pics of some of my 348 boxes. SO hard to find the time with a little one to look after, but here are a couple photos. These are the more collectible boxes. I also have around 8 boxes of the Browning Commemorative boxes, and a couple older Western "shooter" boxes. Here are the neat ones though:

Top left is a Remington "Dogbone" box, like new. Top right is a RARE box, it is a Peters Rustless box of 210 grain, the only offering ever in 210 grain. Very scarce and only offered for a very short time. The second row are two boxes of Remington Kleanbore, one in 200 grain, the other in the more scarce 150 grain offering. Third row is a Winchester Superspeed in 250 grains in a 1958-61 box (only made 3 years) and the other is a Winchester Western in 200 grains in the 1962 label only, only made until the mid 1960s. This was the last "pure" Winchester box offered. The fourth row is a desirable Winchester Silvertip "Bearbox" of 250 grains, the last a Winchester Red and Yellow "1946" box, have two, both in 150 grains. Here are some more photos:

And, here is a quick pic of my 33WCF boxes:

If I can find some time, I'll take a pic of my Model 71 (Standard rifle with Lyman 57 Receiver Sight), and maybe the 33WCF.
Cheers,
Matt

Thanks! just saw the pics

A member on here PM'd and asked if I would post some pics of the Remington .348 ammo I have for my 71 so that he and others could see what Remington .348 looked like in comparison to Winchester. So here it is..... look at the price sticker on the end of the box. $17.90 and at Canadian Tire in New Sudbury. My Grandparents left there in 1980 so these rounds at least date that far back! Been a long time since I heard that term, New Sudbury. Every time I went to visit my Grandparents as a kid it seemed like I was in that store with my Grandfather, usually buying a can of Bulldog brand pellets to take to the cottage to shoot Gramp's air rifle or Gramp was picking up Lake Trout fishing gear. Good times.

So our fellow CGN'r asked to see the details on the box so here is the box to start off with...

Box and ammo....

Ammo.......

I am a 71 addict, I own more than I care to admit. I have found some old Remington ammo, but never the newer Green/yellow box. Something to search for now.

There was some odd ammo at the Lumby show today.
Almost certain a few boxes of 348 Winchester.
Three oar four boxes of 300 H&H. One factory and the rest were marked
reloads.
Forty for the factory and thirty for the boxes marked reloads.
Just 'bout dove in, but then I'd need tuh bye a chewter.

I know a solution to your problem! Always looking for nice 71s!
You know, come to think of it, I don't know if I have seen one of the later green / yellow Remington boxes either...hmm. Yes, always something to search for.

Just noticed this thread....... I own a Deluxe model from 1953. I shot a couple of deer in the Maine woods with it. My American hunting buddies called it 'The Hammer'....... Good no run shots(20yds), there was some spoiled meat shooting 200gr Silvertips. Its an awsome gun to handle in the brush. I liked using it a lot.

I thought it was close but I had to go check,:) same vintage and model as mine ;).

I think my Deluxe must be close to yours for age Johnn.
Looks the same except mine has the metal buttplate.

:)My favorite lever gun calibre combo. I've got a fair amount of info I've collected and printed out over the years. There's quite an assortment of odds and ends that were available for or that the 71 came equipped with, the butt plate and or recoil pads just to name a couple.

It's the same gun as on the photo although mine has the buttplate instead of the recoil pad. If I had an opportunity I'd love to take it out again on moose in the woods or black bear over bait. Maybe the shots I had on deer were too close but the meat took a beating. On one, there was no exit wound and the whole shoulder on that exit side turned to jello. The heart was gone and half the liver. The Silvertip just desintegrated when it hit bone. I believe the guide stories from Alaska where guides supposedly used 71's to cover their hunters had some fact to them, a lot of power.

When I acquired mine it had factory iron sights, but as luck would have I bought a box of assorted peep sights on Ebay and much to my surprise one box was marked ' Redfield receiver sight to fit M71 Winchester'.
And of course it fits like a glove and is a vast improvement over the barrel irons for load testing.

Love the pics of the old ammo box collection! My Grandfather used to tell me there was a time when he could get 250's and 150's for the rifle and he wished he had stocked up back then. He sometimes expressed that he felt if Winchester had offered a loading in a 220 or 225 grain they would have a hell of a cartridge on their hands.
