Hey guys,
This is my first post here, so sorry if it's in the wrong place. I have a Winchester Model 94 serial number 1158430 (I think that puts the manufacture date between 1938-1940ish). Any thoughts on value? Or, where to post in this forum to figure out value?

The rifle shoots damn straight (considering no sight...), and is is pretty good shape (to my untrained eye). There is a little surface rust, which I didn't clean up at all yet. It is a top eject (so any sight would have to be a side-mount sight).

Thanks for looking!

It looks like it was stored in a root cellar.
The critical things would be the things we can't see like the bore and especially the crown (near the muzzle).
If the barrel and crown are as rusted and pitted as the surface metal the gun is little more than a showpiece.

I saw a pre 64 model 70 in 300 H&H that was stored in a damp case after a hunting trip for a whole winter and summer.
It was enough to make a grown man cry.
The deep pitting in the barrel and around the crown rendered it unsalvageable.

Its a pre-64, win 30-30 are always surprisingly good shooters. I own a 62, passed down from my father, first firearm I learned to shoot with, and that thing is damn accurate.
They're awesome rifles for the price they go at...

Have 2 pre 64 model 94s both in 30 WCF (30-30 Win).
They're a tough gun and accurate as old heck but they do need a modicum of TLC.
I put em in the safe thoroughly cleaned and lightly oiled (including the bore) after use each fall.
Every month or so on a bright dry day I'll check the guns for surface rust and air out my gun safes all night.
Never store a gun long term in a carry case.
If there is any moisture left on the gun or in the case fabric it will rust and pit the gun.
They should be stored in a cool dry place, preferably a safe.
Stainless steel guns are more forgiving of poor storage practices but they can and do rust.

The gun looks like it has been restocked and perhaps rebarreled so I am going to guess in the $300 - $400 range.

cheers mooncoon

:agree:
Definitely restocked.
The butt plate wasn't fitted properly and judging by the buggered screws whoever worked on it needs to invest in a set of proper gunsmiths screw drivers.
If somebody flogged that gun to you as "original" they were :bsFlag:ing.
If it shoots good then the barrel is probably OK.
Not "original" but the deer (or moose) will never notice the difference.
I wouldn't pay any more than $300 for it "as is".

As soon as you say "Pre-64" someone is standing there holding out three one hundred dollar bills, regardless of condition... price goes up from there based on condition... the price for that one ain't gonna go up much...

Don't know 'bout yu'all, but this gal keeps me coming back to stare her up and down.
If not for the ill fitting butt plate, I think she's a beauty.
Looks like it hasn't been around the block much.
I'd be willing to bet short of the butt, she's ain't got a bit of silicone inn'er.

That's not the rattiest 94 I've ever seen but it's not showpiece, as others have said. If the barrel doesn't look like a sewer pipe you should get $300 easily for it.
