just bought a model 94 for and was told it was pre 64 because of the obvious machined parts inside but ran the serial number and turns out its a 1979, did they do something to correct the problem in the 70's to make it better, what would the gun be worth. i paid 500 for it and its almost mint just a few minor imperfections. serial# 4689574.

any info would be great thanks

Quality of the late 1970's manufacture 94's did improve greatly over the first post 64 rifles. The worst rifles were from 1964 to 1968 and gradually improving after that. You paid top price for it but if you like it that is all that matters. For $500 you could have picked up a nice pre 64 if you had shopped around a little.

Personally, if I had been told pre64 & it wasn't, I would be talking to the guy I bought it from...

Obviously, the guy either mis-represented the gun OR didn't know what he was talking about...

You shouldn't pay the premium pre64 price when the gun was not pre64...

Cheers

Agreed, bottom line is you didn't get what you paid for. I would be talking to the person that you bought it from if it were me. If you like the gun, then research what it is actually worth and go back to the seller with that info and ask for the difference back. If they don't want to do that, ask for it all back and return the gun. Just my opinion.

As far as the rifle goes, by 1979 there should be no issues with the quality of parts used. I have a 1971 that has all machined parts, but a friend has one of the same year that is crap, so that seems to be the year of major change.
I understand that Winchester didn't make running changes at exact serial numbers, just when the old parts ran out, so defining exactly when the stamped parts were gone could be challenging.

thanks for ur imput, i really do like the gun it is in great shape, i just think because of the machined parts is what threw us off, never thought to run the #, but all that aside i think ill hang on to it for a bit and try to find a pre 64 and mabye sell the one i have.

thanks

OP, you didn't get hosed at $500. top dollar, though. It's nice to have a pre '64, but your's sounds like a good one. I'm sure you'll be happy with it. Perhaps you may even start a collection of 94's. I know I did!;)

I'd contact the seller. If your happy with it and your not bothered by it "not" being a Pre 64 as you were originally told then enjoy your 94. They're one of the favorites in my collection and are a joy to shoot.
Ammo is still under $20 too ;)

Wow guys, you really think a post 64 94 is worth 500 bucks? That's pretty rich in my opinion, top dollar for a post 64 is about 400 bucks and I have picked up many pre 64 for under 500 bucks.
I would say you got burned and would be asking for at least 100 bucks back. These rifles can be had for as little as 200 bucks from time to time and a good pre 64 94 can be had for 4-500 bucks most times.
2.5 million is the 1964 break point in 94 serial numbers, good info to know in the future.

Contact the seller. I made an error on an EE Ad, but the buyer liked the rifle regardless so I kicked a back a few bucks.

I had the same thing happen to me. I contacted the seller and he refunded some of my money. The 70s 94s are not as bad as those from the mid-to-late sixties but I have to agree with c-fbmi on this one. You were definitely hosed as you overpaid by at minimum $100. $400 is top dollar for a post-64 94. There is no way that a post-64 94 is worth $500 (mint or not). The seller either purposely misrepresented the rifle or didn't know what he was talking about. In any case, it is his fault and if he doesn't deal with it accordingly I wouldn't hesitate to leave negative feedback. However, step one is to contact the seller and try to work it out. For the good of us all don't post the thing on the EE for $525 shipped because you will not get your money back. Good luck with it though and I hope this experience doesn't sour you on the EE if this is your first deal. Most members are very cooperative and reasonable when this kind of thing happens.
