They're just one of the ways to crimp the case closed. The overshot card held everything in place. I've reloaded them with buckshot and they worked marvi. Used large rifle primers too. The others require a roll crimp. This one you can crimp with your normal shotgun press. Real carefully!
Special Winchester brass shells for buckshot loads, used a fair bit by the US in WWI even though the Hague Convention forbade the things.
Winchester hasn't used that headstamp for a LONG time.
They are exactly the same on this forum as they were on Reloading.
NOT common these days. Good thing for a WWI collection if you have a '97 Trench Gun.

Seem to be a few more UNloaded around.... and you can mail the unloaded ones. They are scarce enough that I think serious collectors would NOT balk at $15 (or so) apiece.
Seriously, there ARE cartridges out there which sell for a lot more: .256 Frazier/.26 Swift runs about $200 a pop IF you can find one for sale, .28 Ross (the experimental which led up to the .280) is rare enough that they go by auction only.
These ones aren't in THAT category of scarcity, but they sure ain't common, either.
