Hi all, well first, this is my very first thread on this site! Yes, i'm a newbie! I have a Winchester P14 with a butchered stock but with all matchings numbers: Barrel, receiver, bolt and rear peep sight. The barrel looks amazing for it's age and the Mauser action is tight and smooth operating. I have two questions. First, where can i find an original and complete stock for my Winchester P-14? Secondo, did any of you guys & ladies try to find wich bullet/ammo was the most accurate for the Pattern 14 .303 Brit? The 150gr./174gr./180gr. I want to make this piece of history my main hunting rifle! Thanks.

The Winchester Pattern 14 was usually the rifle converted by the British Army to the sniper role, in WW1, also used by the Australians,us Canadians used the Ross sniper rifle, but i have seen both photos of both Brit and Canadian snipers with the Pattern 14 sniper rifle in the early years of WW 2, before they got the No.4 T rifle and 32 scope up and being produced, from what i understand, the Winchester P14 was manufactured to tighter tolerances and better finish, though there were less, Winchester P 14 Rifles made, compared to Remingington, and Eddystone arsenal P14, you have got your self a very good rifle, well made, tough and durable

I've owned P-14's from all three manufacturers and the Winchester is certainly the better of the bunch. The fit and finish are great and the tolerances are tighter. The Remington is a close second.

As for stocks: be patient. They are few and far between bit they do show up on E Bay and the EE occasionally. Be prepared to pay though.

There are some Pattern 14 stocks available on E-Bay now, from Greece, will ship internationaly, listed $125 US, Plus $45 US shipping charges,, like Tyler says, pricey, but if decide, i dont think you will regret it, give a good cleaning, steam out any dents with iron and wet towel, and geive the stock several coats of raw linseed oil, remember these are old stocks, 100 years, and need to be well oiled regularly, u will also need a rear handguard and a front handguard barrel band and sling swivel, there is lots of help available on the milsurp forum, very well informed people, that are a huge help, also YouTube has lots of info on refinishing milsurp rifle stocks, ..but...you will need to take your time and be patient, to get a nice stock finish

Ok, thanks for all the info's. i am not in a rush either since i will go hunting with it but still, i don't want to miss the occasion to get my paws on a nice original stock out there! And about the best accurate cartridges.....anybody have an idea? 150gr. 174gr. or 180gr. and brand? Cheers.

My Eddystone, I have found likes 123gr. better than all the others. I do reload for mine, but found all the heavier bullets barely found the paper, let alone get a grouping. That's just mine. This is not to say all the others will be the same. Cheers.

I have a cut down P-14 , it will put three shots into 2 1/2 inches at one hundred yards using Winchester 180 grain PSP's . Some may think that's not that good , but I think it's pretty amazing that a one hundred year old rifle will shoot that consistently .
I picked mine up with the intention of restoring it , but to be honest , the old oar has kinda grown on me . It has great sights ( issue ) and is damn near indestructible . It'll be going out for cow elk next week , the rifles up to it , it's my ability that's in question lol .

I was recently watching a post on YouTube about P14s and the guy stated there were only 225000ish (he had a more accurate number) made before being switched to the M17 production. So YouTube is not the best place to take numbers as facts so I am wondering how many WP14 have been made. I have one that's been milled (not by me) still has its ears but mismatched bolt so just a shooter, however the barrel is shiny and the serial would but close to the end of the run so that's at least something but it would be nice to now the exact number as it might be the last one off the line. Never know

Courtesy of member Nigel Greenaway with pics by Terryinvictoria, the article has a nice photo comparison of how to spot P14(F) reproduction sights from the authentic originals. The repro has a slightly larger adjustment knob with cross checkering. Real ones like the one mounted on the rifle which is the subject of this Knowledge Library entry, have vertical lines on the knob.

Periscopic Prism Co. Ltd. converted 2,001 of them to sniper rifles…

You found a good one alright. Superb rifles, it's no wonder the action were used to built thousands of custom magnum sporters.
