Winchester primers?

i am fairly new to reloading (9 months)
i reload .45 LC for cowboy shooting & have been using CCI primers
stock of primers seems to be a problem so i bought some Winchester large pistol primers (WLP, but the box says for regular & MAGNUM)
will this be a problem?

No problem, WLPs are very versatile.

...a bit on the hard side, though. I've stopped using Winchester primers for my 686 'cause I was getting too many failures.
 
mmm interesting I been having problems with the 44 mag 629 when you #### the hammer and fire its fine.. but if you pull the trigger 3 of the 6 normally work... thought there might be something wrong with the gun but I never dismissed the primers either... seems like they might be to hard... what did you switch too?

Yeah, I don't think there's anything wrong with the gun other than the hammer spring being a tad on the weak side. I considered getting a stronger one until I realized it was easier to switch primers (I was even having problems with factory Winchester .357s!).

Pretty much any other brand is softer than Winchesters; Federals in particular work great for me, but they're a bit more hazardous to handle.
 
Same problem with Win small pistol primers in my Python. Not the end of the world, but the occasional failure shooting double action.


Besides the hardness they're great.
 
I find the Winchester primers easier to seat than the CCI's I was using.
They both work fine, but I found I really had to put the pressure on to seat the CCI's all the way.
 
Interesting. I always thought that CCI primers were the hardest out there. I've had some failures with CCI primers but never with Winchester primers. When a pistol/revolver starts acting up with CCI primers I switch over to Winchester primers and when the gun starts being unreliable with Winchester primers I know it's time for a visit to the 'smith.

My revolvers have a screw on the front of the grip that can increase or decrease the spring tension. Just load emty primed cases and crank up spring until you get 100% ignition.

Switching to Federal primers will also cure the problem. Softer cups, but soem danger in priming tools. I blew up my Lee Autoprime with them.
 
Haven't Chrono'ed them but LP primers work fine in 44Mag, so should work ok in 45LC.

My buddy chrono'ed the differences in LP to LM and SP to SM primers years ago. He said the difference was like 50f/sec. So not much really. As long as you get the grouping you're satisfied with, then he said just to use LP instead of buying yet another type of primer.

I used to use only Winchester but CCI work fine too. Depends on what is in stock when I buy 'em.
 
I have fired 30000+ 45acps with winchester primers I dont think I had any failures that where caused by manufacturer defect, I also fired 5000 40 S&W with winchester primers A OK, 10000+ .223 with small rifle winchesters fine, and about 1000 .308 winchester large rifle... over all pretty good.

All handloaded btw
