Winchester, Puma 92 carry options

I just picked up a Puma M92 carbine. (Stainless 16" .454 casull)

Its to be my next wilderness carry gun when I am back on my feet and I was wondering how people prefer to carry these? I have been googling the question for a while now. Uncle Mikes seems to make the only reall rock solid method I can find. But I am not too happy with the style of their magazine band and I dont feel that there is enough metal in the barrel band to drill and tap.

I have seen too many fore ends crack at the sling swivel stud to put one there, so thats out too.

I was hoping that somebody would know of something better than uncle mikes.

ALSO.... Looking for a sling recommendation. Its kind of like socks. The seach for more comfort never ends!

The most comfortable sling I have ever used to date was actually from buttler creek (same thing as Uncle mikes) Its the Alaskan Magnum if memory serves. It is thick neoprene with strong elastic sewn over top to create a sort of bungee effect. VERY comfy. You can get it with cartridge loops, or without.

This is what I use for a Browning Model 92, which is the same as the Puma really. It works great and has been going strong for over 20 years now. It is rock solid and there is no need to drill the barrel band. Only drilling is for the rear stock swivel screw.

The sling I use is a simple 1" leather strap. No real need for a fancy padded sling because the rifle only weighs about 5 pounds or so.

Yeah. Uncle Mikes seems to be the only game in town. I guess it must be the way to go.

That wont work on mine though. My mag tube has a .760 diameter. Their website doesnt list anything big enough, or in stainless.

Mine is stainless too. I ordered a blued one. But the distributor sent a stainless one. What can I say... Its good looks won me over.

I was thinking about taking a 1/4" length of stainless 1" square stock and drilling a .76 hole in it and filing the shape I want to the remainder.

But I dont know if I want to spend that much time filing. I cant stand for so long... :(

It would be nice if someone made a fore end screw with a swivel for a head. Then I could attach the sling to the left side of the rifle.

Shelldrake, that is just the kind of sling I am looking for! Hard to find plain slings these days. Everything has fancy tool marks and embelishments.

I might just end up buying a scrap of leather and a couple chicago screws and try to make it work on my own. (I think I could handle that!) Either that or I will get a WHOLE MESS of brown para-cord and start tieing.


*EDIT* I found a listing on midway's website for a .765 barrel band that would fit perfectly. Its not stainless though. just plain steel, in the white. Its $30 US. Arg! Good thing I have nothing better to do! Oh, and they DON'T ship to Canada.

My 92 will never have a sling.
But as my use is hunting, it's always at the ready, in my hands.
There are times of course when I need both hands free for climbing hills etc, and it's short enough that I simply make sure it's safe, and stick it in my belt.
 
Yes. I think you are right about that. But I dont really hunt very much. I just hike. And hike and hike and hike!

I like to explore the gold rush trails.

And I end up carrying alot of stuff even though I am just going out for a day or two. A sling lets me keep the rifle handy, but not in the way of my GPS, knife, water, climbing, using the camera, etc etc etc.

If a barrel band attachment is good enough for fancy safari rifles, its sure to be good enough for me.
 
i looked at those, but all the ones I could find were just a strip of deer hide. It just doesnt seem tough enough to me.

But there is good news!

Brownells carries the talley barrel band that will fit my rifle. They carry all the sizes.

I am going to call them in the morning and see if they have a single stainless wood screw stud they can sell me for the rear and I am in business!

(Oh, and a set of swivels.... and maybe a sling.....)
