Winchester Rear Hammers

I've noticed on some Winchester Lever Action rifles they have a normal hammer and others have a bar type hammer instead. Why the different hammers? I'm currently looking at an 1918 Winchester and it has one of these weird looking hammers and I would like to know more about them.

Maybe you are seeing the add-on extension sometimes installed to make cocking easier with a scope?
