Winchester Safari Express .375H&H

I just got an Alaskan M-70 from Epps a couple weeks back. Haven't shot it yet. Waiting for Leupold bases and rings which I just happened to notice a fella on the EE had for sale. I have a Leupold VX III 1.5 x 5 to mount on it. The piece of ebony also just arrived in the mail for the fore end tip. I like ebony/black fore ends. Going to strip off the factory finish and apply my version of an oil finish, as it will be hard to install a fore end tip with out marking the fore stock anyways. Haven't yet decided whether to put on a fine ebony grip cap or order the metal one from Western Gun Parts.
The trigger pull from the factory on this one came set at a consistant 3.25 to 3.5 Ibs. So until I actually fire it I will leave well enough alone there. I have always had a soft spot for M-70's and this one is a nice addition to the family.

Might as well cut the bbl back to 22" while you're at it.

What do you use to get that f**king glue off the barrel!? There was a Winchester plastic label on the bottom of the barrel; peeled it off and now I've got this stupid glue left on the barrel!

I have to agree on the M70 Safari's. I have one i bought of a fellow CGner in 458 Lott (rechambered). I am really impressed with the gun overall. very well made nice handling rifle.

FYI, some Hoppes No.9 worked perfect to remove the glue.

Here's pics, admittedly a plain-Jane rifle.

I won't cut down the barrel on mine, as that would require removal/altering the factory front sight.
Don't they attach those sights with screws?

Use WD40.

I dunno, doesn't matter. The barrel length is a non-issue; fyi, my ZKK-602 .416RM is 23-1/2", so 24" barrel just isn't a factor to me.

I have a Leupold Vari-XIII 1-5X (or there-abouts), that is on the Lott. It's going to come off the Lott and go onto this Winchester.

Wow, nothing wrong with a plain-jane rifle when it looks like that. I may just have to switch plans on which rifle I want and switch to one of these!

I had my gunsmith re-install the front sight on my 602 when I had the barrel shortened. It needed a lower front bead but I found one with advice from CGN and it shoots dead on to the express sights again.

It seem to be to camps here, those who love and use the WIN 375/458/416 express rifles, and the other who own and shoot both Win Express and there lovely BRNO/CZ 602/550 express rifles! Nice to see that both these guns are thriving here in Canada still!! Most think I am nutz to hunt with these large calibres for Moose, but my good friend Dave been hunting with his Sako FN actioned 375 H&H for decades with one shot kills with old Winchester 270 RN factory ammo. He just bought a 505 Gibbs CZ/550, it will be neat to see what happens to a moose when hit with a 600 grian bullet!!
cheers Dale Z!
PS John just missed out on a S&L 358NM!!! I love the Husky 35 cal you have, luck duck!

Hey Demonical
We all have to have a 375 H+H,it has been there for 100 + years.
If I had to have 1 Rifle it would be a 375 H+H or a 338 win.mag.
Any time I go on a remote hunt I have taken the 375.(Alaska,Africa,Yukon)

I don't find the 24" barrel unweildy, and would prefer the lower muzzle blast and slightly higher velocity.

These rifles have steel floorplates and trigger guards. The stock dimensions are more broadly proportioned than the Super Grade to add a little weight and soak up recoil. There is a fair bit more surface area to the recoil pad.

I love my 375. A little bit of a highjack here but as everybody was saying how much they like their model 70's, I love my two. I got an Alaskan in .375 and a SG in 30-06.

Looking for a nice used VXII 1-4x or a VXIII 1.5-5x for the Alaskan to take her hunting this fall...

I didn't either till I had one done at 22". I actually specified the bbl to be 21" but it got crossed up at the smith and came in at 22". Either way I've owned them at 22", 24", 25" & 26" and the best by far for handling is the shorter 22". To each his own, but I would not go longer. :)
