Has anyone tried the Winchester Select Energy Trap gun?
I'm thinking of picking it up from either russells or wholesale since it seems like a pretty good gun for a not too crazy price... but has anyone heard anything good or bad about it?

I was playing with one the other day. Nice gun.....seemed to be well made. The only beef I had with it was that it seem to me as if the stock was kind of beefy. Its was definantly fatter than my Remington 3200 Trap and Brownings

I shouldn't be writing this - it goes against one of my golden rules - and I always maintain that a shotgun is as unique as clothes, my perfect shotgun cannot be your perfect shotgun.

But, the Winchester is not an inexpensive gun, and has no excuses. My experience with this thing is limited to just one gun, so take this with a grain of salt...

The thing handles like a pig on the end of a pitchfork.

The balance is all wrong.

The weight is in all the wrong places.

The relationship of the butt stock and the grips is all wrong.

The wrist is thicker than Babba's ankles, and the wrong shape.

It's ugly - all trap guns are ugly, but this one had ugly for breakfast.

Did I mention that it handles like a pig?

It may fit you perfectly, and you may like the way it handles. Some people really like lime green leisure suits. If you are one of them, more power to you. FOR THE MONEY there are much better guns. Any of the Queen B's feel like a sports car next to this thing. My advice is to go and handle as many guns as you can get your hands on. Swing them around, shoulder them, track imaginary targets. If, after that, you still like the Winchester, buy it.

Just my $0.02 worth, I do not mean to offend.

thanks for the input. are there any guns you would recommend I try to find and handle (in about the same price range ~$2100)
Much appreciated,
Mike

I've heard that it is very difficult to get warrantee work done on a Winchester in Canada. A guy in my club had a Winchester autoloader shotgun and broke a part. His gun was away at Winchester for 4-5 months before he got it back. You may want to check that out before you buy.

Mikey, sorry to take so long to get back to you - my wife thinks that Friday nights should be used for other than cruising the gun boards - I don't know where she gets these ideas.

To answer your question, I am going to assume that you want an under / over, it must be an actual trap gun, and that you want a new gun.

The new Wholesale catalogue lists a Browning Citori Target XT Trap for $2,519.95 with your choice of 30 or 32 inch barrels. An excellent gun, but a little above your stated price. I consider it to be generally in the same price category, you might feel differently.

The same catalog lists the Beretta 686 E with 30 inch barrels and an adjustable comb for $2,399.95. Again, a little higher in price than the Select, but only $140 more than the Winchester equipped with an adjustable comb. I like Beretta competition guns, so I may be prejudiced here.

Saving the best bargain for last, check out The Shooting Edge in Calgary for their line of Fabarm shotguns. They offer no less than 5 models of trap gun in your price range, starting at $1,949 and going up to $2,359. The adjustable stock Gamma model is right on your price point. These are nice guns, and there is a world of upgrades and options listed, including extra barrels. Check out their web site.

If you are a real Winchester fan, forget the new guns and find a Winchester 101 trap model. There are many minty examples out there if you look, and you will save a few hundred dollars.

Whichever shotgun you choose, it must fit and feel right to you. The balance, the grips, the pointability, and the sight picture must be compatible with your physique and perception (an adjustable stock helps, unless you already know the dimensions you are looking for). You cannot get a feel for these issues by reading a catalogue - you must handle the guns. Handle as many as you can, swing them, throw them to your shoulder repeatedly, and trust your gut instincts as to what feels right. Who knows, it might even be the Select - but I doubt it.

"Sharptail"s" right on the money.
I'd go with either the Browning or Beretta. The few extra weeks you need to save-up the extra $$ will pay-off down the road. Fit, balance and pointability is first-most, and it has to "feel" comfortable. Know where to get my Beretta, Browning, Remington & Winchester parts/repairs ... can't say the same for
Fabarm & others. The 686E is a lot of gun for the money. If you're going to shoot primarily trap - go the extra distance and get the adjustable comb.

Select trap

Miket I met a fellow from Medicine Hat that has the new Select trap, and he loves it, and this fellow works at a sports shop and could buy any gun on the market. His shop sells all the others peviously mentioned and the boys in the Hat shoot a pile of trap. Regards FS

Mikey10 ;If you want to hear from someone who actually has one of these instead of hearing about a guy who "knows" a guy at the club then Im your guy. I've had mine for a year now and have shot well with it. The barrels on my trap gun are belguin made and 32" long It has a wide rib, about 1/2", which I prefer. The lock-up on them is like a berretta and they take the browning invector plus chokes which is good for me. The stock on it has a adjustable comb which you either like or hate, as well as a palm swell. Yes it seems a bit thicker then say a beretta but I like that. I have had to get the stock shortened on mine.
I'm 5' 11" 215lbs so I think I'm average in stature,but everyone is different.
As far as the price I paid 2500.00 for mine when they came out but I got a full set of Rhino's with it,so your price does'nt sound to bad. I have shot the Synergy, which is supposed to be the comparitor as well and I perfer the Energy. Besides that I dont know what I can tell you. If you ask me whether I shoot better with it ? I'll be honest and have to say that I think so but it my be the lessons I took that did that .
Anyway let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to answer them.

browning XT trap

Lebaron sells the XT trap model for $2399 and if you buy their club membership for $26.75 and order online, you pay no tax. (the membership save you 7% on all purchases). therefore the cost would be ~ $2450 shipped to your door. ($25 for shipping). An excellent gun for the money.
