Winchester Shotgun Problem

Hello, I recently picked up an older Winchester pump shotgun. After firing about 50 rounds through it I heard a snap and a bunch of stuff fell apart inside the gun. Taking it apart I found the little piece on the slide arm bridge that holds the firing pin in place snapped off. I know that I have to order a new one from somewhere but the only ones I could find all had screws holding them to the bolt. My model gun doesnt have a screw holding the slide arm bridge to the bolt so I'm wondering if the screw model will fit my gun and if not what model gun I have. I know its either a 1200 or 120 Ranger. It's got a 1200 barrel but the guy who sold me it called it a ranger. I just need to know what part to buy so my gun can fire again. Thank you.

sounds like you might be better off finding a local gunsmith and having them take care of it for you - this may only be the symptom of another problem that if left uncorrected will only leave you dissatisfied with the rifle.

The Winchester Model 1200,2200,1300 and 120 pump shotguns are low quality shotguns. If the cost of repair is more than moderate I would just scrap the shotgun and get another. Many people regard these shotguns as dust bin guns.Meaning when you have anything more than a moderately priced repair, throw it away and get something else as the shotgun is not worth that much in the first place.

I realize there are fans of the above shotguns who are most likely going to disagree with me but this is my opinion.

I've seen that type of damage from wanna be Rambos racking in a shell with one hand.Is it the arm that attaches to the pump that broke? If so you can weld that.
Don't throw it away and become a high end snob there are a lot worse guns out there.

28 gauge, ssgtrillium and rig, you all make good points.

If I felt so strongly about keeping a gun, I'd be more inclined to buy a few more for parts.

Early in model 1200 production a milling cutter was chipped. This resulted in the bolt being milled with a slight lip where the slide bridge connects. This caused unveven torque on the part and eventually the part would fail. (like yours) (source Brownells gunsmithing volumes) It is an easy fix but should be done by a good Winchester smith. Several come to mind including Longs and Epps. Once this repair is made they rarely re occur. (just replacing the screw usually results in repeat breakage) They are decent guns and well engineered just not made of solid steel like most people like. The rotary bolt is probably the strongest out there. Did the firing pin come out of the bolt?

just my two cents, Darryl

I have owned and used a 2200 for trap, duck, pheasant and just plain old fun shooting for 35 years without a single major problem. I have fixed a loose butt plate, and had a little trouble changing the barrels (one short, one long) because I tightened the locking nut too hard once or twice..

WGP-for parts -all the later 1200/1300/1400 had waay too many plastic parts for me-but-they were designed for a price point-and -overall- are OK
