Winchester Supreme 17hmr casing issues?

Just got one box of 50 to try in the 17gr and had multiple split casings which meant having to pry them out of the gun. Had shot Federal 17gr and Winchester 20gr previously with no issues. I'm guessing its just an ammo deal but is this common?

I'm shooting a Marlin XT-17 with a heavey barrel. So far the 20gr are grouping the nicest, but curious as to why the Supreme would split casings fairly consistently?
 
I as well had bad luck with them in my Savage. But all ammo I tried did split some. But they were the worst. 1 in 3 most the time. Hornady and CCI was 2 or 3 a box.
 
All 17 HMR ammo is made by CCI, far as I know, so it appears to be a rifle problem, not ammo,unless you ran into a bad batch. Could be something with the micro groove barrel on the Marlin? I've read about others having issues with the 20gr Winchesters out of Marlins on a US based rimfire forum.

Doubt its a rifle problem. Never had a problem in my savage with hornady, cci, or federal. Now winchester, if you can shoot a box you are lucky. Many many ftf, almost all fte, and more splits then I want to remember. Bought 100 one time and that will never happen again.
That said 400 or so hornady 0 problems, 250 federal 0 problems, 300 cci 0 problems, 100 winchester 100 problems

They're all made by CCI. Maybe you got the same lot of Winchesters as the OP? Have you tried a different lot number in Winchester?



CCI, Federal, Winchester, Remington and Hornady all loaded here at CCI in Lewiston, Idaho with a V-max bullet are identical, with the exception of tip color. Manufactured on the same equip, to the same ballistic specs, using the same components other than color of the tip of the bullets. Obviously the shellcase 'head stamp' and packaging would be different on the various products.

I would like to hear her explain why the Winchester loads weigh about 2.5 grains more than the Hornady and Federal loads, and why they shoot different in my gun, if the only difference is the color of the bullet tip. My chronograph also shows a significant difference between brands, that seems quite consistent with different lot #s.Obviously, despite her statement, there is a difference in the ammunition.

I think there is some other behind the scenes stuff going on here. If they are all made by cci why do they all shoot different

Nope why would I? It shots like crap and just plain doesnt work so why would I buy more of it. Not much winchester ammo gets bought by me anymore.

I bet CCI is importing 17 HMR ammo manufactured in China and selling it illegally under the Winchester brand name. Yep, that's it......
 
I had some problems with the 20gr hollowpoint winchester super x doing that. The 17 gr winchester supreme has given me no problems.

Phone up winchester in the states and ask them for the number for olin Canada. You can probably get it elsewhere but that's how i got it :) The guy you'll get referred to is a decent guy. Sent me winchester gift certificates for the boxes of ammo I had from that lot. I bought some 12g slugs :evil:
