I've always been an over/under guy for the most part when it comes to shotguns. But have been wanting a semi now for quite some time..Decided to get a SX3. Will choose which model monday afternoon when I go to the dealer to make the final decision..
I have a question though..I've decided between two..the composite 12 gauge, 3 1/2" chamber, 28" barrels..(for all purpose)...and winchesters new SX3 sporting. Adjustable cheek, 32" ported barrels, 2 3/4" chamber. (which comes with 5 signature chokes instead of three flush mounted, as with the composite..Also a hard plastic, fitted, take down winchester case).
The question: since I want a semi for all around.. upland, minor waterfowl, and the shooting sports..Could I buy the sporting model with 2 3/4 only chamber for trap, sporting clays etc..and buy a separate barrel in the 26-28 inch range with a 3 or 3 1/2 inch chamber for hunting?? Would the receiver and gas system be diffferent in the sporting model and not be able to handle more than 2 3/4 shotshells, or would that not be the case..Question may be dumb..but I'm not a regular semi auto user/owner.
Thanks to any replies.
The sx3 is the exact same gun as a browning silver, the only difference being aesthetics and a shim kit for the stock. The working mechanisms, gas system etc are identical. They are also the same identical gun as the now discontinued Gold series. In fact both my silvers had markings on the barrels saying Browning Gold. I have owned a few of each of them although I havent owned the SX3 as I just wouldnt give them the extra $100-$150 for the same gun just to get a stock shim kit. My silvers were both 3.5" models and even though it said in the manuals they would cycle all 2 3/4" FIELD loads of 1 1/8 oz of shot, they in fact also cycled factory target loads loaded with 1 1/8 oz of shot down to 2 3/4 dram equiv. and did it very very well. Never once had a misfire or a jam with any of them. I do believe some models of the silver now come with shim kits for the stock and being priced $100+ dollars less you may want to consider going that route. Just my .02 worth.
P.S If weight is an issue then you may want to consider a Maxus. I have one in a 3.5" - 26" barrel version and it weighs in at 6lb-14oz. It is also without doubt the NICEST autoloader I have ever shot in terms of felt recoil. It is absolutely amazing! They are not lying when they say it has 44% less felt recoil and muzzle jump than the competition. I was shooting a mixed bag of leftover shells from old promotional 2 3/4" steel waterfowl loads to 3" 1 7/8oz lead loads at crows and I couldnt tell a magnum from a target load, they all felt like I was shooting a 2.5" .410 load!! It is that soft shooting and NO muzzle jump even with the heavies!!!
OOPS........I guess I should have read the second page, LOL! Well trust me you cant go wrong with that gun either. Nice purchase. BTW, 3.5" models are ALOT better for resale as well should you decide to get rid of it. Most hunters/shooters today wont touch them unless they have the Roman candle chamber! Enjoy your new gun!
