Winchester SXP??

Hi,

So my PAL should be in my mailbox any day now, and I was wondering what the Winchester pump shotguns are like? I saw that the SXP waterfowl was in my price range and thought I'd get some input before I get too excited about one. My other choice would be a Remington 870. I have heard that the new 870s don't have the quality of the older ones though?

All guidance is appreciated!

The SXP is a great gun, soft recoiling, easy to clean, inexpensive, light, and not at all ammo picky like the newer 870s are.
Bought mine last summer. Camp and Field combo, and so far have about 9000 rounds through it, the only sign of wear so far is on the hammer which has a large imprint in it from being shot a lot. It's not causing light primer strikes or anything like that yet, so it should be good for a few thousand more shells before replacement.

1 thing to note though, the chokes that come with the gun are complete trash, you will need to get some aftermarket chokes if you want better patterns.

Makes a Good trap gun, an ok skeet gun, and a great duck gun. I would recommend this gun a 1000 over before mentioning the new 870.
 
Don't take the jewman's experience as gospel, pattern your factory chokes before dropping cash on after market choke tubes. My browning silver patterns very well with its invector plus tubes and my winchester sxp also patterns acceptably(they use the same tubes), although the full would get swapped for an aftermarket turkey choke if I was able to chase turkey's.
I suspect that the reason for differences in patterning may have something to do with the forcing cones but I'm not sure.

The 870 works. No, the express doesn't compare to the Wingmaster or Special Purpose of yesteryear but they are very relieble guns and if they fit you better then an SXP you're better off with an 870.
 
The new sxp's have a pretty high comb as conpared to an 870 or older Winchester 1300. I have to run 2 comb dropping shims in my SX3 to make it fit properly. But I don't think the SXP coMes with shims like the SX3.

Every gun fits different pick one that fits proper.
 
There are plenty of great pump action shotguns in your proposed price range (I'm guessing $400 - 600?). I don't think you can go wrong with either the SXP or the 870.

The best advice for buying a shotgun I've ever received is to pick up all the guns in your price range and buy the one that fits you the best.

Let us know what you end up buying, or in general, what else you looked at if you didn't buy anything.
 
I have the camp and field combo with the 18.5" defender bbl and 28" vent rib bbl that is threaded for chokes. Smooth action and very fast when firing. Balances well and points nice for me. Easy to shoulder and swing. I have only shot clays with it but I have run it quite dirty and it hasnt missed a beat. Buying separate barrels after the fact is expensive. Try to get a combo if you decide to go that route. P&D had them awhile ago.

The bolt and barrel lining is chromed, and is also back-bored, which is supposed to produce tighter patterns, whether it odes or not is pretty hard to notice.

IMO great shotgun, especially for the price. It is made in Turkey which scares some people away but I am very satisfied with mine.
 
My friend's SXP lead me to buy my SX3 (I already had an 870, and wanted a semi-auto). The SXP fits me better than the 870 and hits everything I point it at, although the 870 is still usable. It's an express, and I bought it a few years ago new. Never any problems... but I prefer the Winchesters. Nice guns for a great price.

Oddly enough, my SX3 has made me consider the SXP.

You're right; a lot of people are hung up on the idea that guns made in Turkey are rubbish. At this point, everything is done by CNC so it really shouldn't matter where it is made. They are a well finished gun.

you haven't been shopping yet?!?! I had bought and paid for three rifles before my PAL arrived... as soon as I saw it was approved online I went shopping and paid for them in full to put them on hold until my PAL arrived. then all I had to do was pick them up when it hit my mailbox.

Haha I definitely had the itch to go as soon as it came in, but work got in the way haha! I did however go today and looked at pumps until I was blue in the face! However I ended up with a Mossberg 535 (not even on my potential list). Fit the best out of the ones they had in stock. It was a toss up between three, a Weatherby, the 870, and the Mossberg. The Mossberg did however come with 3 chokes. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get out to try it out.
