has anyone had experience with marlin and winchester lever action rifles.
I'm looking to buy a lever action rifle but can't decide between marlin or winchester. From what i'v been told winchester is a brand name or HD complex. But marlin not so fancy but tougher rifle. Any comment, opinion
suggestions or hard earned experience welcome::bangHead:

I have owned many Winchesters and Marlins, and a few Henry's. Marlin will do everything you need it to and then some.

I still love a good old Winny lever action(and still own a few), but in the real world Marlin's will win hands down every time.

I own both in .30-.30.....I like the Marlin better than the Winchester. The action is smoother and the pistol grip stock is more comfortable for me that the straight Winchester. The Winchester has a bit smaller receiver which makes it a little lighter to carry in the bush, but the Marlin balances well and is also nice to carry. Both will do the job, but the Marlin is the nicer rifle in my opinion.

I have a Marlin Lever (was my first gun) and am quite happy with it. It cycles very smoothly and shoots pretty damn accurately for a lever gun. When I first looked to buy one, I checked out the Winchesters and found that although they are somewhat "slimmer" in profile, I didn't like the way the action opened to expose the top of the receiver. The Marlins are different in that they are side eject. Don't think this is a negative (as Winchesters have been around for a long time with the same action), but it was something that I personally didn't care for. As was mentioned, you might have a harder time finding a Winchester lever NIB than you will a Marlin as they don't appear to be making the Model 94 anymore... I just wish Marlin would make a Trapper sized lever gun - kinda like the discontinued (IIRC) "Buckhorn"...

hsld.

Winchester are better looking and lighter guns. If you are looking for a .30-30, go Winchester. If you are looking for a large heavy caliber like .45-70, go Marlin guide gun.

but if you want a real useful lever gun, go Browning BLR short action in .308!

Yep had lots of both, for a hunter Marlin is the best, most comfortable for me.
Most accurate lever I ever saw was a 375BB Marlin, I let go
IMO... BLrrrs are just not comfortable & have terrible trigger & actions

Marlin

Marlin all the way. The only Winchester that can make it up to a Marlins level, are the Winchester 88's.

I've own / owned Marlin (4), Browning (sold) and Win.(3) Marlin is still my favorite.

As for John wayne never carrying a Marlin.....well not much to say except for....

Never trust an American with two first names. John Wayne is right up there with Ricky Bobby :D

I heard John wayne and Rock Hudson were good pals...:D :D :D

Arch :)

I have a Winchester 94 for Firearms Safety training. Guns used for this take a lot of abuse. Screws keep coming loose if not Loc-Tited. I used a borrowed Marlin with no problems before I picked up the Winchester. 94's are not the easiest guns to strip and re-assemble. If you do, keep notes on the order you take them apart, reassemble in reverse order.

I'm a biased Marlin fan obviously. Tighter smoother action. Super easy to disasemble/reasemble. An extremely simple and efficient design. Winnies are the opposite in these categories IMO.

Having said that in the 30-30 class rifle the pre 64 Winchesters are twice the gun as the newer models. And in all honesty I think they look nicer and trimmer than most Marlins which wear the perch belly stock and pistol grip giving them a kind of bulky appearance. Wow, did I just say that? :slap: But then there's the 1950s and older Marlins with the original square bold design and these are about as good as it gets.

:) I own 6 Marlins and 2 Winchester lever actions in 30-30 and 45-70. My 11 year old daughter shoots a Marlin336Y (1" groups at 110 yards) and my 12 year old son shoots a Winchester Trapper 94 (took a record book bear at age 10 with it) but it is not as accurate as the Marlins we own. The Marlin's quality is better I have found and more accurate with 170's. The Marlin's pistol grip does help to bring the rifle quicker on target. Have had some troubles with the Winchesters but none with the Marlins.

thanks folks i appreciate the advice. sorry for for posting in wrong spot im a newbie still getting use to forum
