It's like the Chev VS Ford. In reality, whatever 'turns your crank'. My favorite Winchester, a Model 71, in .348 of course. For Marlin, an 1895 GS in .45-70.

The Duke wimped outa wwll so who cares?

Yes he did at that. He was my hero when I was a kid, then along came Clint.

I've shot 'em both, but it was so long ago (Winchester) that I can't make an honest comparison. I do love my new 336XLR though. You could try either, and if you don't like one, just sell it. With the newly rediscovered joy of lever guns, you shouldn't have too much trouble unloading it.

thanks folks i appreciate the advice. sorry for for posting in wrong spot im a newbie still getting use to forum
Well, the reason I asked to get the thread down here was actually for your benefit, they are hunting actions and there are more lever guys here!
I myseelf have never had much to do with either brand of rifle, but I think a nice Winchester '95 in 30/40 would be okay ....

I've owned quite a few Winchester 94's and 92's, one 88 and several Marlin's. I still have an 1894 SRC only because it's different, but if I was to have one lever 30-30, I would go with the Marlin.

I personally have a fondness for 88's... but I only own a BLR .243 and a Winchester AE .356 right now.
I have had several Savages.. they rock. And it is very hard to argue the merits of the Marlin....expecially now with the leverevolution ammo!
The BLR is the best all around lever in my opinion.

versus

Just replaced a Win with a 336ss Marlin. I asked several gunsmiths and all agreed the Marlin is better made one way or another but the kick I got is that I can take the bolt out to push the crap out the end of the barrel. The Marlin is actually designed that way. I like the Winnies-all that history and yet I prefer the look of the curved grip and it fits me better than the Win. I find the straight grip uncomfortable.

New Lever Might Raise Doubts

I thought the BLR was the best lever, and this model was the best BLR.

I just bought it. It is a 308 with stainless barrel and lam stock. I had the fiber-optic site installed at the shop.

It seemed like a good idea when I ordered it, but I had my doubts when I saw it in the flesh. It looks a little too showy, a little too much like a gun Boy George might use in a music video. What sealed it was my girlfriend’s reaction upon seeing it. She and her friend raved about how “pretty” it looked. Then they both ran their fingers up and down the stock saying they loved its smooth texture. That was it. It has to go.

I am selling it to a Romanian fellow I know. European guys can get away with it. In their hands, a gun like this looks sophisticated. It must be the accent and their fashionable clothes. But if I showed up at the range with this rifle, my ###ual orientation would immediately be put into question.

In my view, the gun is as ### as a BMW convertible.

Any thoughts?

Big Bill, you have deep seated issues torturing you. Came back from a Firearms Safety course today, and now I need a screw for the loading gate for my 94. Anybody want to trade for a Marlin?
