what length barrel are we looking at and appx weight?

I don't know if its much different to the Whelen for close to medium ranges on Solid big Deer.
the Kimber 708 can do it, but I'm in slightly thicker scrub for upcoming hunting season. the Hawkeye is ok but quite a heavy lug.
cheers

I doubt you'll find a M-70 in .338 any easier to pack around than your .35. I recall some years ago putting the run on a pesky polar bear while on foot and carrying a borrowed push feed XTR in .338 loaded with 250 gr Interlock handloads. That M-70 cycled like butter. IIRC, the barrel length is 24". Anyway, it was quite a rodeo, and took a couple of hours to resolve, but I didn't feel undergunned by any means, even though my own rifle in those days was a .416 Rigby; it felt like I was carrying a big rifle. Its quite possible that a game animal would be unable to discern the difference between the .338 Winchester and a .35 Whelen, in fact, if your .358 bullets are on the soft side, perhaps intended for use in a .35 Remington or .358 Winchester, but the .338 bullets are strongly built, to withstand high impact velocities on heavy game from a .340 Weatherby or a .338 Lapua, you might even find the .35 Whelen is a better deer killer. A .338 Winchester loaded with 250 gr bullets has a muzzle velocity comparable to a 180 gr bullet in a .308, but you can speed it up considerably with 185 gr TSXs.

Thanks boomer,
I just got in from a high elevation sambar scout, I underestimated the snow dump an was around 500m too high up the hills, and so I wasted a bit of time but more relaxed around camp this weekend.

I lugged that heavy 35 Whelen a few Ks... I don't think I am going to do it again, not with the backpack on aswell.

sentimental value is keeping that whelen in the safe, although I am thinkin of selling it as a barrelled action, as it sits in a ramline now. p o s .

it weighs a tonne.. I am over it.

I was thinkin about the Win mag option, I don't think its worthy of a change, perhaps if we discuss Tikka t3 and something around 33-35 calibre, I may concider this.

Whats you're thoughts here? my concerns are for in close 100m stuff on BIG rutted up solid Sambars, the 7mm , whilst can do it, its more on chilled out deer face to face than on their face, I will carry the KM84 on 75% of hunts but some I do want thump up close....

the 270s a keeper for long range face to face - on the heavy side - rem700 sps 24 tube x50 scope...
94bb is open sight and I feel undergunned as far as range goes..

big bore is not my thing really, the whelen had it covered but as above.. over it.

I am a .338WM fan, kills effectively on anything you will hunt. That M70 looks to be a Winlight model with the McMillan stock, and is likely to be at or near 7lbs. The standard cal winlights (270, .30-06) are 6.5lbs.

I had a SS 338 wm t3 and it was under 7.5lbs scoped. Had a 200gr sst and 210gr TTSX load as well as a 250gr partition load. Got rid of it when I went on to get a 338-378 and 338lm but it shot really good and recoil with a limsaver was no problem.

Still got yer Winchester Big Bore .375 mate? That would be the cat's ass inside 150 yds. fer sure. Easy to pack and quick to aim.:)

yeh the Big bore for life, only problem is most shots are between brush or across gulleys, picking out a shooting lane with a scope is tough at times let alone just blastin an open sight round through it .

it does have its place for sure., great to waltz and point and shoot in closer ranged stuff.

I may have a buyer for the ruger 1 303, but then I still have the whelen.

cheers
