I recently inherited a Winchester model 12. Chambered in 2 3/4 12ga with a fixed full choke.

as I understand this is a lead only choke (no steel).

I found some ammo, Winchester universal 12ga 2 3/4 hull 1 1/8 oz 4 shot.

Are these #4 shot safe for my model 12 with a fixed full choke? More over...are they LEAD? the box says nowhere on it if the shot is lead or steel.

The hulls them self say universal #4

You can shoot any lead configuration you want out of that M-12. Slugs, SSG, BB's, and definitely #4's. When in doubt if it's lead put a magnet to the shells, the magnet won't lie. Steel is not advisable unless you get that full choke honed out to at least Modified

Apart from the steel shot question the Winchester Model 12 has been called "The Perfect Repeater" and many shotgun guys consider it the finest pump shotgun ever built. They discontinued the model because it was too expensive to manufacture at a competitive price. Values have dropped due to the steel shot thing as they are no longer a good choice for waterfowl hunting. If it is in 95% or better condition with no modifications from factory configuration(recoil pads, refinishing, sling swivels etc.) it has some collector value to a small number of people. Otherwise they go for $250-$350 in general. An excellent buy from a quality standpoint.

you , agreed. also a fave of Canadian soldiers in WWI trenches due to its reliability and ability to hold the trigger to the rear and just pump to fire.

No slugs for this shotty, and no steel is what I have decided.

Do I need to worry about any particular shot sizes in this full (fixed) choke?

No, she will digest anything you give her as long as it's 2 3/4 inch lead shot or slugs. Slugs won't hurt it a bit. You may be thinking of the Winchester 1897 Trench Gun used in WW1. I am not aware of the 1912 being used in WW1, however it was used in WW2, Korea and Vietnam by U.S. personnel.

Huh... I stand corrected.

Serious, slugs in a fixed full choke?

Yes, slugs are designed to pass safely through a full choke unless indicated otherwise.

Consider that when Foster slugs were invented, there were no specialized slug guns, most shotgunners owned only one shotgun, and it was usually either a full/modified double or a single shot or repeater with a single full-choked barrel.

Yup, any lead will pass through that choke, shot, buckshot or slugs, no problem there, its just not designed for steel because the barrel fixed choke isnt hard enough and steel might damage it, most steel chokes are titanium i have found.
