Hey Guys
Just wondering how many of you seriously test your rimfires using windflags?

Surveyors tape about 1 foot long attached to an empty 9mm case by an elastic band. Dropped on top of a 1/4" wooden dowel sticking out of the ground. The surveyors tape will lift with the slightest breeze. I place one halfway down the range and another a couple feet in front of the target.

First, one has to ask what level of precision is being pursued and if it's a competition what equipment is permitted.
Flags that show direction and magnitude are the most effective. Typically, the flag closer to the shooter has the most relevance as the atmospheric effects earliest in the bullet's flight will leave a longer flight duration prior to impact for that effect to have influence. A flag close to the target has far less significance because the wind will have done the damage, perhaps unnoticed. Another consideration is that over protracted distances , 22 rimfire exhibits a rainbow like trajectory much higher than line of sight where atmosphere may be behaving differently than what a flag indicates.
Any flag is better than no indicator and like any equipment , the shooter needs to practice with it and learn the effectiveness.
Some good info in the wind reading section sticky at the top of the forum.
