Wind me up about Ontario Moose Tag allocations

So at having only 4 points in Ontario WMU 21A I did not draw an adult tag. First choice Bull and second Cow/Calf. I have however heard unproven rumors that tags were allocated for less points. The draw is basically over with only leftover and unclaimed tags to be offered. No one is going to take away your tag if you claimed one but if there is any truth to these rumors I would sure like to know. I don't know where the MNRF contracted out the draw but I am sure they didn't do it themselves.
Please don't really wind me up but any facts would be interesting.
I know it is way to late to do anything about it and all participants will be sworn to secrecy so I guess I will not be going for the moose this year. WMU 1C is just too far and remote for these old bones.

I doubt that is true with regard to unit and choice... the allocations are computer generated from the point options available. It may be true of the same unit but different choice. Ie... someone might draw a calf tag in unit 21A with only 2 points, while you are unsuccessful drawing a cow tag with four points, etc... there is always the possibility of a computer glitch, or inputting error. I drew a calf tag with 2 points in a different unit, as I have to leave the adult tags for my hunting clients.

I tend to agree as long as the program is input properly.

The way the new allocation system is designed, what you describe as "unproven rumors" are just that. Highest point hunters get first crack and so on down the line in WMU's where population census supports tag allotments. Pay NO attention to unfounded rumors. People espousing misinformation are like diapers, always on your a^^ and always full of the same stuff.

There are a lot of people out there that don't like the new system trying to stir the pot. Unless you see a screen shot of the wmu and the tag they drew, I would assume B.S.

It's also possible that low-point winners put in for the archery draw. Less popular, so likely fewer points required.

It's a possibility that someone could pull a cow/calf tag ahead of you with less points as it's a less desirable tag AND they put in for it as their 1st choice, not 2nd or 3rd.

Good reply, the system is new and it’s a new learning curve to figure out the best chances for a group of guys that normally hunt together. Our top point guy drew a bull tag so we’re pretty happy.

Second round will be interesting as there are 3 choices and you only have your points dropped back to zero if you’re successful on your 1st choice.

My wife and I and my buddy all had zero points, well, I think maybe one for living in the North, and we chose calf for first choice in 19. We all got calf tags. If you hunt with a party, make sure someone applies calf, so that you can at least hunt.

Well it seems that there were no big screw ups and as one said it is a new system that we have to get our heads around to maximize our chances. We had to do that with the old system as well.
I will just have to see what happens in the second allocation.
Good luck to everyone.

Points are only reset to zero if you accept the tag. Most crews will only accept one tag to let other members gain points as necessary to enable better chances for future seasons which is a smart thing to do.

That’s correct, points are reset to zero only if you accept the tag on any of the 3 choices on the First draw and the 1st choice on the Second draw but what I was saying if you drew a tag as your 2nd or 3rd choice in the Second draw and you accepted the tag, your points would not be reset to zero.

They are treating the 2nd or 3rd choice in the Second draw like the old surplus tags were issued in years past.

Quite a few of my friends up here (WMU 21A, 19, 18) have all gotten tags with very few points. Our theory is that many Southern Ontario hunters with large numbers of points applied for WMU closer to home, freeing up tags in the north.

Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't believe it so I went and read the regs myself and there it was on p61. Im already turning mine back as our group has tags but I'll throw back in 2nd choice cow/calf just in case now
