I should probably know the answers to these questions but looks like I'm going to have to lean on my fellow Gunnutz. I'm looking at a wingmaster and it has a barrel only good for 2 3/4" shells. Is it the barrel or the receiver or both that dictate the size shell that can be used. For some reason I have it in my head that I need a shottie that can handle at least up to a 3" shell. The wingmaster I'm looking at has a short barrel on it so I'd like to buy a longer one anyway. I'm wondering if I buy a barrel that handles 3" shells will the gun cycle a 3" shell? Which leads me to my next question can I put a 870 or another Remington barrel or am restricted to only wingmaster barrels?

Thanks.

There are many slight variations of the 870.

Within gauge, barrels interchange between 2.75" and 3". There might be some forearms that are a little narrow through the barrel channel. In addition, 20ga guns were originally built on the 12ga frame then later on a smaller frame, as such, the barrels do not interchange.

A 2.75" receiver also has an ejector built for the 2.75" shells and will not work with the 3"ers. The ejector can be modified to work with 3" shells.

On the barrel itself, it is the chamber length itself that determines 2.75" or 3".

As is, a 3" barrel can be used on the 2.75" receiver. Shell length will be limited to the shorter shells though.
