Winnie M70 lovers - Need some loading advice !

I'm a Model 70 push feed lover (old school?) and I just fondled zxvbn's Model 70 Extreme SS .308 from www.ellwoodepps.com recently. I really liked that new Winnie M70 made by FNH (usa) or is it BACO (Browning Arms Co in Morgan, Utah?) :D

Now what I liked about my push feed M70 StealthI and Hvy Varmint rigs was that you could drop a cartridge on the feed tray and slam the bolt forward. Life is good. :) I like this way better and faster....

I'm reading other (distant and older) articles about how one MUST feed a CRF (controlled round feed) or Pre-64 action and that is ONLY from the magazine, thus avoiding the large claw extractor issues. Will my :eek: #### fall off if I load it 'push feed' style?

I just went to my gunroom and fed a 30-06 cartridge by laying it on the "feed tray" to my Pre 64 M70. I did this 69 times and my #### is still working.
 
Well, thanks so far for the advice. I have had my eye on a Winchester Stealth .308 2010 production sitting at an Alberta gun shop ;)

Anyways... It's mine now and en route to Bantario! :D yuk yuk yuk

So let's see if my #### stays on me when I get to the range to test out the new M70 Stealth .308

With almost every CRF action I have ever used I have been able to put a round in the chamber and close the bolt. The only ones I have run into that wouldn't close on a round were a couple of military M98 actions. On these a very slight amount of beveling or polishing of the extractor would fix this if one so desired. Personally I always just feed from the mag to be safe.
 
Military Mausers were intended to feed only from the magazine. I have seen M96 and M98 extractors broken when the bolts were slammed shut on chambered rounds.
M70 Winchesters have extractors which will ride over the rim to close if a round is just dropped onto the follower.

Had a left hand m70 sporter 2 in 300wsm. It will only feed from the mag. But hey it's a hunting rifle I should only need one if I'm doing my part right?
Oh and don't buy a m70 in 300wsm if u wanna sport shoot it. Can't say my shoulder enjoyed 20 round through that buckin horse? But great elk rig, it only took 1-210gr Berger vld at 310yard. Didn't even have to follow it into the bush
 
my model 70 300 wsm would jam if you used it like a push feed. Had to push the cartridge out with a cleaning rod. I beveled the face of the extractor with a rotary sanding disc and a dia grinder. It's worked perfect ever since. Sometimes the face is too square for the extractor to jump over the cartridge rim.
 
I have two of the new M-70 with CRF. With both rifles one in .243 and the other 30-06. You could not close the bolt without difficulty on a single round placed into the chamber. The 30-06 was difficult the .243 you just couldn't close it. Both fed and closed smooth as glass when fed up from the mag.

A fellow CGN fella posted a while back if you "GENTLY and SLIGHTLY" bend the big claw extractor back it will allow the cartridges to be fed directly into the chamber and the bolt closed as it takes some of the excess pressure away from the claw end of the exractor.

I did this to both my rifles and they now close smooth and effortlessly on single rounds. This procedure takes a little trial and error to get it right. Best to relieve the pressure in very small increments until the bolt closes just right.

My Kimber 8400 in 30-06 with the same CRF bolt style worked fine on single fed cartridges from day one.

The Winchester M-70 owners manual states single fed cartriges must be brought up from the mag in order for the bolt to close easily. So this is a common trait of the new M-70's that Winchester is well aware of.
 
This proceedure you are dicussing is exactly why I have changed more mauser style extractors by 10 than I have with the Rem or Sako style of extractors. Yes some will clip over and some will not, military 98 actions will not without major reshaping of the claw. They actually dovetail into the bolt body just short of the bolt face and have zero give, even extensive reshaping until they will pop over usually only lasts a few rounds until they break the claw. More modern CRF like ruger and the new CRF Win do not have this dovetail and usually have enough give and clearance to pop over, but beware as making a habit of it will break the claw on these as well in time. This is my single greatest b!tch with the CRF is the claw extractor and the number I personally have seen broken doing exactly this.
The pre 64 as it left the factory originally would not clip over, however Win changed it somewhere along the way, after complaints I assume, but they cautioned against this practice as it would cause the claw to fail (read break). Many more were reground by smiths over the years, but the same caution applies.........do it too many times and the extractor WILL fail.

Thanks for adding that information, and just when I thought I had that little quirk solved. For 30 ought yrs I carried a M-70 push feed, very reliable set up with absolutly no operational issue's in that time.

I got used to loading 5 down, putting one in the tube, closing the bolt and your good to go. The new Kimber appeared to like that procedure as well, but the new M-70's sure didn't.

I will take heed and alter my loading procedure.
