Winnipeg is one of the few cities in Canada that I do not know very well. I have driven around it many times but only through it twice and I did not linger. I have a business trip there in the early fall and will have some time to spare. Can anyone recommend some gun stores?

There's not much other than Cabelas, and the range where I shoot, Xtreme Gun Shooting Center.
With the loss of Wholesale Sports and Canadian Tire getting out them that's about it.

Unfortunately (or fortunately.. depending how much time you have), your options here are quite limited, and the best shops are not in Winnipeg but rather in rural Manitoba (Wolverine, Jo-Brooks).

Wholesale Sports closed last year leaving only Cabela's as the big box outdoor store in town.
Fast Toys Performance is online based but if you're looking to pick something up I'm sure that could be arranged.
Xtreme shooting centre lists a good selection on their website and is the only range here which allows drop ins.
Heights Archery apparently has firearms as well, but I haven't been there in years so can't really say for sure what their selection is like.

Try MacDonalds sporting goods in Portage la prairie, about an hour west of Wpg. Nice old time gun store, good folks.

Cabelas is about it. Too bad, since Winnipeg has had some very good gunstores in the past, Jennings, Ernies, SIR, Farmer's Supply, Winnipeg Supply, are all gone now. If you're interested in something a little different though, you could check out Prairie Gun Works/PGW Defense Technology at 761 Marion St. in the industrial part of St Boniface.

Can you just show up there? I was under the impression that was purely a manufacturing facility. I don’t think they have any retail/PR department there?

I have just popped in there, but that years ago when Ross was just getting started, and still doing general gunsmithing, so a phone call to arrange a visiting time might be prudent. 204-231-2976

PGW left that location a long time ago, now located in a non published location.

Tried to visit Heights Archery but they don't open till Noon so no go.

How about a little beer tasting instead. Try the "Barley Brothers" a craft beer bar at 2005 Pembina Hwy. They average about 100 different craft beers on tap on any given night.

Xtreme has some nice stuff, roll of the dice whether the owner decides to be a rude tool or not.
