IF you want to shoot 1100 plus and you have a 338 LM and your not concidering a big 7mm or 30 cal... possibly twisted for the new 195VLD thats coming out in the new year ... i dont even know why you started this post. Waste of everyones time
 
.260 REM. Great ballistics, cheap components, good for hunting (if you were to want to use it for that), works on a standard short action. If I build a rifle in the future it'll be a 260
 
In regards to barrel life on the 6mm crusader, the guys at gap who developed and others have not "given" a direct round count but most have them have broke the 2500 round mark and still have great accuracy. Koboyach on here was at 2500 and still had 1 inch groups at 300 yards. Any of the 6mm -7 mm's will be fun to play with. I am just so in love with the 6mmC I will always have one.
 
6mmBR, 6.5x47L, .284 Win, 7mm-300 WSM in order of recoil / wind stability for long range. Allows you to stick with SA, smaller is super accurate, larger has more boom to push through the wind but more recoil and less barrel life, both important if you are doing alot of shooting.

Have the first 2, have components to build the last but during my wait for pieces I accepted the fact I'm a recoil wimp so my 7mm is going to be a 284.

And if your still stuck in the mind set that you need a huge boomer to push past that mythical 1000 yard mark your waiting my time , 308s can be pushed accurately to a mile , the 22cals to 1500, he'll Jerry (mysticprecission) has pushed a 22cal to a mile. If you knew how to read and comprehend you'd understand that I started this thread so maybe some one could sway me to one caliber /cartridge or another for a good reason. And the only thing I said I'm not considering is a .50, not once did I not say no .30cal as long as it fits in a standard long or short action I'm open to it

This cartridge is cool, and i think as a 6.8 or 7mm, it would be perfect. Before speaking in absolutes, it is important to clarify what "worn-out" means. Most barrels will continue to shoot with reasonable accuracy long past the point where they are no longer "competitive". I have no doubt the Crusader in 6mm will still be delivering fun, but at 2500 there will simply be no riflinging anywhere near the throat in which to engage VLD bullets. Of that I am absolutely certain. As to its accuracy with that many rounds, there is no way I would ever count on having that sort of accuracy. I would suggest the 300M results at 2500 are the exception, not the rule. I don't want to sound contradictory, but overbore indices do not lie.

And that is the whole reason why there have been at least a dozen chambers tossed around and that will grow if you include wildcats. THERE IS NO 1 BEST OPTION. Pick a flavor, have at it.

All chamberings and cals are a compromise. New products will create the next "bestest, greatest".

If you had a sport in mind or an end use application, then things can be narrowed down a lot better, but a "best" LR anything is like saying one dog is the best type of dog.

Had the pleasure of covering all the typical cals from large to small. They all go bang and something arrives at the target. I now gravitate to the small cals but have a couple of larger projects in the mix cause sometimes things just have to make more noise.

I am actually going throw my winter life Crises and am also building a fun project this winter.
since i have a left over rem700 action, i will be building 300RUM out of it.

Ordered:
Shilen ss matchgrade blank @ #7 contour 1/10 twist
JP tact brake
Choat custom tact stock
timney trig
Sightron SIII 6-24x50
Custom Dura-Coat (Stealth digital white)

I will be dealing with Jerry from Mystic Precision for this build and have talked to him over and over.
good guy to talk to and deal with. he sure does know his stuff and very experienced to get some out of!


this will actually be a budget build so total will cost will only be sitting at $3000 plus some custom paint jobs and few mods here and there. Have talked to few class F shooters and national LR shooters and they have been recommanding Sightron than my NF so i am going to test her out to see if it can handle the bush and little bang here and there. and ofcourse Jerry from Mystic precision says the same thing and do carry them in stock. so why not try it? lol


you could start by asking your self what the build will be used as?? benchrest or hunt/LR ?


i personally will build the caliber i dont have and just have fun with it since most caliber is long range if you make it LR.

How bout a 6.5-06 or the ackley version. I shoot the regular version. 140 vld's at 2988 Fps with h1000 and a 24 inch tube. Almost the same bc as the 7mm 168. Hardly any recoil and you can reach way out there too. 8.5 twist does the trick

A nice long barrel 7mag will launch 180 vld's just under 3 grand. Recoil is totally doable in a 10lb ish finished rifle

Or you could scratch my itch and build a 7mm practical. (7-300 win mag). Apparently a 8.5 twist is what will be needed for the up and coming 195 Berger vld's. Otherwise you could probably get the 180's to 3150 ish with a 28 inch tube
 
My inexperienced vote goes to a 243 AI, or way left field, 375 RUM or Barrett.

Actually the 17 hmr is kinda cool because you can get them
In a semi with large capacity magazines and they are zingers, though not much to support the build of a precision rifle.

Already has everything else, it's the only semi that'll take large magazines and you can use for shooting gophers (non res)

Why would anyone build around a bullet without having it in their hands? You have no idea how to design the reamer without sample rounds made that the customer wants tailored to his specific needs. Point is all the wondering/speculating is a great way to end up disappointed because often times stuff just doesn't come out the way we'd hoped/anticipated when guessing. Secondly Brian Litz says there is still a lot of uncertainty about this bullet and don't expect to see it until late 2013. So i would say your advise is a complete waste of time..........
